I'm gonna try Scuffham tonight...
I'm going back and forth on what to get. I REALLY don't need anything elaborate...and at $1800...the Kemper is really kind of out of my sane price range right now. Really, the same with the 3rd Power. I played a Fender Deluxe today and loved it...Forgotten how much I love that tone...I could get a used one and an L6 M9 and be done for under $1000.

Yeah, you could. Or you could get the Kemper. Or the 3rd Power. You know you wanna. I kid a bit. But the wants vs needs thing is tough. I'm just a hobbyist at this point, so for me it really is just wants. And that's tough enough. Yeah, it's a hobby, but it's a 30 year one and counting at this point. When it's your living though, i think it may help to step back and get the GAS emotions out of the decision-making process to the extent that's possible. And I know that is somewhat antithetical to the whole point of this place. I dunno. I still think you should get a nice ribbon for your AC 15. And the Kemper. Cheers, Geoff

Want vs. Needs is a legit debate. I'm a poor guitarist. It's not a primary instrument for me, I just like to bang around and have fun with it. I have a 66 Bassman which I also use with bass, and a 79 Mesa Mark II. I've been thinking about selling the Mesa in favor of something cheaper because I have more money invested in guitar gear than a non guitarist should. The problem is that I'm picky about tone. I listen to samples or demo different low cost amps and they just don't get me fired up. I tested an Egnater Tweaker a few months back and couldn't get into it. I was thinking about the Tweaker again today so dialed it up on youtube. Guess what... still sounds bad to my ears. I guess what I'm saying is that if the tone of the 3rd power or the deluxe gets you fired up and excites you to use them, that alone may be worth the price of admission.

That seems odd.... really odd. Are you using single coil pickups?

Yeah - the pedal introduces a hum when I flip it on. It's a tiny pedal and has to be plugged in...got a one spot ordered, but right now I'm using a Radio Shack 9V PS (hanging head in shame)...so, that could be the problem.

The demo video sounded great. I use several drive pedals in series in my stage rig. Empress Compressor, JHS Superbolt, Quinnamps HBS, Jetter Purple, Jetter GS3. Usually two are on, but sometimes they're all on. Very low drive on each. Gotta check the Green Mile out.

Sounds just like a good tube screamer

There's such a thing as a good tube screamer? Good to know. Bumping this because I tried the Scuffman plugs today before my Slate "everything" sub runs out. Really lovely clean and "half dirty"--the difference in the feel of the Marshally and Dumbly models is impressive with the same level of grind. Running at 64 sample buffer on an RME PCI interface, 88.2, FWIW. I'm using the LA610 DI because it's the one I use for any guitar/bass DI. Now the problem gets into that I couldn't run a full session at 64 samples, but you know-new computer could. Or, again--as I've pointed out before, if you rely on playing virutal instruments, you're better off keeping them on a different box anyway. No mis matching sample rates, real time resampling, you can always keep the buffer insanely low and keep the recording DAW insanely high.... If I were someone just needing a recording solution...I wouldn't hesitate with these. I DO wish they'd done more than a 57 and 160 for the cab impulses....but, still--both are perfectly solid for guitar amps. Now, will they have the same issue of not "Sitting right" in a mix? Maybe....but, the chords' overtones seem to ring in tune...which is more than I can say for most modelers.

Even the Sucffman-Sim does not simulates the speaker distortion / compression ... and that feels and sounds wrong!
That does not mean I cant do creative stuff with it. Most often I do not use Amp-Sims for guitars, great fun to use them for synth sounds.
