The references to similarities to the KM84 have piqued my interest What more can you tell us about the capsule, please? If there are any schematics (or sonic) similarities that would be unintentional))). We always are trying to follow unconventional ways, rather than simply copy, make a 'clone', or 'inspired by')))
Indeed, that classic circuit takes its lineage from a tube directly driving a transformer (and jFet very much behaves pretty similar to a tube) and was used (with some minor changes) in other mics quite a bit--Oktava, quite a few Neumann's, etc. AKG went another direction and together with the jFet often used a BJT transformer driver. That helped to use lower ratio transformers, which allowed making them quite a bit cheaper and its quality less critical, but also lost some sonic magic over a sonically superb, simple, and elegant jFet--->transformer solution. In this case the transformer quality is crucial.
As for the capsule... once we are getting more of them I will crack one open to learn its internals. Not sure what else I can add, other than it is a little wider cardioid (which I actually, like better than regular one), but still has an excellent rear lobe rejection.
Best, M

The first review of MG20 from Michael Aarvold:
I ordered 5 MG20s last night. I tried sn 01 (oh yeah: it's the mic in the picture) and another Mark quickly cobbled together to mate with it (on saxes/woodwinds) for my horns session the other night (2 Tpt, 2 Tbn, 2 Saxes/Clarinet) and really liked them.
As I told Mark, the mics have a sonic characteristic I generally associate with tube mics: a sort of subtle velvety texture in the low mid/mids that is similar to if you tried to make the soft sound of steam escaping a pipe by mostly closing the back of your throat and pushing out a stream of air.
On a more general note, I would also say that I see two schools of mic design emerging in a more obvious way in recent years: School 1: sounds good and musical. School 2: the sound is neutral and captures a 'snapshot' of the sound in front of it in an accurate-sounding way--at least that is the attempt.
CAVEAT: I only had a very short time with the two MG20s, so this is a 'shoot from the hip' evaluation. To me these mics fall into the former (musical-sounding) camp in a very good way: zero trace of hardness/edginess while at the same time capturing acoustic instruments--in this case, saxophones and clarinet--in a very natural and musical way that brings to mind the great-sounding instrumental recordings on classic records.
I love 67s on saxes and I would say, by comparison, the MG20s superimpose less 'personality' of the sax sound, but are similarly flattering in an unhyped way. They also are satisfying and full-sounding in the low mids, but completely without any trace of 'mud' and this is a HUGE plus for my particular preferences in sound. And the off axis leakage felt just a little lean (un-fat) in the low mids, but otherwise natural-sounding... also just what I was hoping for. The mics appear to have plenty of gain--maybe more than Sennheiser MKH40s/800s. And the MG20s weigh very little, so you can stick them on a boom arm that is fully extended without worrying they will be drooping in 20 minutes. I have a feeling the low end might be very extended also, but that's just a feeling.

Whats the latest on the release date of this mic? Thanks Right now I am out of country. Originally I planned to be back mid January and start shipping beginning of February. Now plans a little changed, as I am getting married. I am back February 6th and if all is good and no delays from the Anodizers the new ETA is end of February. Best, M

Any updates on shipping yet? Sorry, didn’t see this one. The microphones are mostly assembled and we were just about to start shipping… even printed quite a few shipping labels. The box inserts, which came last minute need adjustment, so unfortunately, we had to send them back to do more work on them. So everything depends on how fast the vendor can turn them back to us. I will update once hear from them. Best, Mark

I pre-ordered a pair. I'm a big fan of Dr. Fouxman's work.

It looks like the Samar site still have the "Holiday introductory price" of $569.
I would get a pair, but I need to get another TF10 to go with my current one. It's incredibly natural sounding.

Did anyone other then me pre order one? I pre-ordered a pair as soon as I saw the thread. Should work out much much better than the new Serrano 84s and used Elation KM201s I’ve only had a chance to try on snare next to an 57 and they both were unusable; most likely broken but I still haven’t had the time to test that that’s the case. I will this coming week though! Both times, I’ve had to quickly replace with a Shure SM-81. Into a Dan Alexander racked 1272, it’s not too shabby! 😉
