I used to have my octo card in the rebranded owc version of this but tb2, I unplugged fan and left sliding door open about a 1/4 inch to enhance air flow: never a problem and zero noise.

Didn't know the OWC was a rebranded Sonnet. In any case, I have a machine room, and I think I'm just going to put the TB enclosure in there, and purchase long MADI cables rather than worry about the Sonnet fan noise. I'm still learning about MADI, but it turns out the MADI optical cables aren't actually that expensive. $50 for 6m optical cables is cheaper than spending $100s more for a quieter TB enclosure. That said, I'd still be curious to hear about fan noise with these.

It was a few year’s ago, may not be now, anyway having in a room is a good solution!

No! The sonnet has the noctua fan in it that runs at 15db spl, the quietest studio I’ve ever had was ambient 15db spl(super quiet)

From what I've read, it doesn't seem like all of the Sonnet enclosures necessarily have a nice quiet Noctua fan, but I'd be happy to be wrong about that.

edit; this fan is a ridiculous 6.8db spl

Anybody have any idea how much latency gets added by going thru one of these enclosures versus having a PCIe card loaded directly into a slot in a computer? Surely it doesn't add that many samples of latency to go PCIe > enclosure > TB > Mac versus having a PCIe card directly loaded into a Mac (if you had an older Mac that could internally host PCIe cards).
In other words, how much latency does the PCIe to TB conversion process add?

Not gonna be a good answer I haven't used mine in this configuration yet, just using the Lynx (n)TB right now. I used the lynx aes pcie's in my tower before and latency was never an issue, I can't imagine pcie speed would be a bottle neck even set up remotely in the sonnet, I believe the latency on the Lynx is less than 1.3ms with TB3
