Kinda weird. I was sending a bass signal through it and it came out hot at first. Now the gain reduction meter isn't registering. The meter works on the other settings so it's not that. It also feels like no compression is happening, actually no compression is happening for sure.
Seems sort of odd. I wouldn't think that the output from my DA could possibly get hot enough to damage a unit like this.
Any thoughts?

If GR is not working but it still functions like a line amp then it's most likely the opto cell is toast. They should be good for about 10-15 years, though......

If there's a side chain driver tube, yes.

If there's a side chain driver tube, yes. Hmm... this is a bit beyond my scope so bear with me. There is a side chain knob so would that mean there's a side chain driver tube? And would it be incorrect to assume that swapping out a tube is as simple as it is on a guitar amp?

Yes and in fact one of the tubes in the side chain driver is a 12AX7 like you would find in most guitar amps. Swapping the opto is also just as simple. It's the same type of socket as a power tube.

Nice. That's something I can handle. Do y'all think I fried it with a hot signal? That seems a bit hard to believe but it happened when the bass signal hit it. Must have been that, right?

To be honest, I don't know. That's beyond my pay grade. I've only had one opto go and it was an original UREI in a a 35 year old LA-2A, which I just chalked up to age.

Most likely the T4 opto cell.
Think of this as a great opportunity to contact Bill at Kenetek an pick from one of his various T4 cells which are all fantastic

Well the cool thing is this forced me to try a new signal chain for my bass and I got a pretty cool sound using the Aphex 661 instead. Man that thing is the best $100 I've ever spent.

Apparently AS wanted to build their own T4 cells because Kenetek has a different value resistor in the cell which makes a difference in the behavior. Found the link: www.audio-scape.com/news/t4b

Found the link: www.audio-scape.com/news/t4b Kenetek makes several different ones with different time constants. I imagine there is probably a slower one akin to the 60s ones AS seems to be copying. FWIW, I have one of the "JBL Era" LA-2As and it sounds killer.

You should reach out to Chris at AS. He will get you up and running. And yes, the 661 works great on Bass.

Exceeding the max input level would cause audible distortion first and to cause damage you'd need a higher voltage than normal line level can deliver - like a fault in a connected device.
