My lunch was made in the USA. But I don’t know how many of the ingredients were, now that I think of it.

Those new tariff are going to bite ! Any Tariffs, will have some effect on prices, but in order to have a reasonable & responsible conversation we must first figure out how to have this discussion fairly within John’s rules. Trade policy is by its nature hard to discuss without getting some what political. It would be even harder to moderate without bias. At this point it would be irresponsible to even start a discussion without an actual real perposal. If & when we do have a concrete perposal a discussion would be interesting if we could find a way to have mature conversation if JK wants to take a trip through that mind field & we can be grownups.

It’s a very layered thing, depending on which state you live in, there are large economic trade relationships with my country Canada. I live in our nation’s capital, Ottawa, so trade and the US perspective is a recurring news item. If a US state imports materials from Canada, if tariffs go up the price increases, who pays, the US consumer, that’s who. It’s nice to think that the US economy can immediately ramp up and supply all needs, but that may not be realistic. The US/cdn trade agreement renews next year I think: stay tuned and we should all be careful what we wish for !

I suggest we avoid it (discussion of tariffs/politics/anything that remotely interfaces with politics) like the plague here. We (humans) suck at communicating about touchy topics over the internet. Just look at <gestures at everything>. Remember how bad it was during the pandemic? <shudders> I like talking to the people here about gear/music and other adjacent topics. I feel a camaraderie in that respect. It's fun. I'm not interested in anyone here's politics, and I'm certain no one's interested in mine. Feels like a dead end, full stop.

I was just thinking how cool it was that we made it through the election without getting into it. Would love to keep it that way because I can't say there's anywhere else I go online where that has been the case. The music biz is hard enough, we don't need to venture outside of that haha.

Audioscape for sure hand assembles them in house. They have tons of photos showing this on social media and during their employee interviews.
But yeah, most the components themselves, even the circuit boards I'd guess, are not made in the US. I'd wager every US audio company uses components from overseas.

I am getting the sense that a lot of this comes down to accepting that the US doesn't even have the capability to manufacture the core components anymore, if it ever did in some cases. We don’t make anything in the US. Our main export has been the US dollar and now that those in charge were asleep at the wheel and allowed the Petrodollar to stop using the US dollar - no one wants it anymore. BRICS is going to change the standard of living in the US if people don’t wake the fuck up. US lost about 200,000 manufacturing jobs between 2016-2020. The US gained about 750,000 manufacturing jobs from 2021-2024, which is pretty impressive. Hopefully the trend continues, but based on the above facts and this weeks events… not so sure.

It says hand built. I think this thread inadvertently creates the impression that AS gear isn’t assembled, soldered and tested in the USA. In making electronics, who has a build list 100% created in USA? Anybody ? That’s what I thought. I’m not interested in where individual components are made. I presume with anything electronic I buy the individual parts in it have come from all over the world. Where would one draw the line, components made in Chine probably come from minerals and metals mined in Australia. We do live in a global economy - thank goodness!

Are we doing this thing where we count pandemic job losses and recovery as though there was no special circumstance in 2020? Even accounting for a down tick in 2019 there were 400k manufacturing jobs added '16 to Pandemic shutdown. Biden also added more manufacturing jobs but not 750k. 170k once pandemic accounted for. So this is actually an eight year trend that survived two wildly different governing styles, hopefully it continues. (Source www.factcheck.org/2024/09/trump-vs-harris-on-u-s-manufacturing/)

One thing I find to be true is generally.
“Made in America” = high quality build.
We bought American made dog hair trimmers and they have been built to last a lifetime.
My wife has an American made Kitchen mixer - made to last a lifetime.
The American made gear and mics in my studio all have suberb build quality and look to be made to last a lifetime.
As a Brit I equate American gear as very high quality “no corners cut” - build it once - build it right - products.

I agree with Ragans post, that said it’s unfortunate that people can’t talk about politics, tribalism has replaced acknowledgement of simple facts and dunning Kruger carnival barking has 10 fold more power than assessment of experts, how do I know this? I stayed at a holiday inn express last night

I started replacing my decaying non-stick pans with stainless steel all clad earlier this year. It was mainly because they don't have a coating that can come off and basically last forever but the made in the USA part was a nice bonus.

On a different thread, someone was saying that AS products are fully manufactured in the U.S. Is that true? If so, I have to say their price/quality ratio is incredible. Wanted to buy from a different US maker, but their prices are way higher for the same product. Yes, all our gear is built end to end in our Daytona Beach facility, including stuffing pcbs. Grateful for everyone who supports and believes in what we do. You can see a video here showing our facility and everyone that works here, nearly up to 40 people:
While parts we use originate from the US (or all over the world originally), I do want to point out that manufacturing in the US has its advantages when it comes to sourcing ALL those parts. Whether it be NOS tubes, obsolete transistors/IC's or fets used in these vintage designs. We can't overstate how important this is to the final product.
We've always prided ourselves on being as transparent as possible about who we are and how we make our gear.
Cheers, Chris

The company has spoken so feel free to lock the thread again lol Fwiw I had no idea my question would become political, but I guess everything is now yikes

Thank you for your time and response Chris. Y'all fight the good fight (while making truly awesome gear) and I have endless respect.

Has Audioscape ever claimed to be populating their PCBs in the US? I doubt they are, at their prices, though I have no specific knowledge of it. I always suspect there is some overseas design/layout happening too. Again, I have no specific knowledge of what Audioscape is doing. But, ever notice how like Stam/Audioscape/Warm/Behringer/Heritage/etc will all suddenly have, say, a 33609? This happens with mics. 3U will design a C800 voiced capsule and suddenly 12 companies have a C800 style mic coming out. We have claimed US made on everything from the start.
All our pcb designs and transformers are done in the US. All R&D on site, most by yours truly. David McDonald in Texas (who does some killer Flickinger preamps) helped with the pcb design for the Metal Knob 609 (MK-609) and we had been working on it since 2021. We got stuck on the comp attack times alone for one year and fought with it until we got it right. A lot of hard work went into the design, custom molded knobs and finding every NOS obsolete part to nail it (no one talks about the dual fet in the comp section, but I digress). The lengths we went to sourcing original parts are documented on the product page here.
Cheers, Chris

Oh snap.
Doubters proved wrong again...
What a great time to be alive.
I see some Audioscape 76's and OPTO's with some of that good old fashioned American iron to compliment my Coil preamps in the near future.
