Oooo, niiiccce face plates mhbunch! I haven't had the chance to test either of the 560 or 70X in depth, but from the brief test I did it's obvious they are up there in the hi end league, and super smooth builds too. Higly recommended.

LOVE my fresh nv73s. They just sound insane on everything. Those are nice front panels, where did you get them Iif you dont mind me asking? I just placed an order for an nv73.

Just did the high pass mod to one of my NV73s. Works great. Like mentioned earlier I felt with the pair of .22µF caps the HPF cut too much above 70Hz, so I started looking into this today. I put a speaker in front of an SM7 in my booth and tested different frequencies while toggling the HPF on/off. Had a 14dB cut @ 50Hz, 7dB @ 90 Hz, 6dB @ 110Hz. Even at 230Hz had approx 3dB cut and the HPF didn't level out until around 1k. This is not how I want it so I've ordered .68µF caps now. Can't rule out I've got something wrong though.. so winetree, if you get the chance to confirm my measurements I'd be grateful.

I guess not many care about this, but anyway, a follow up on the HPF. I replaced caps to .68µF instead and now it's almost working too gently.. I get approx 4-5dB cut @ 50Hz and and it levels out at around 150-170Hz. I could settle with this, but it would be nicer with a steeper Q HPF, starting lightly at around 100-110Hz and then dive to around 8-10dB at 50Hz. I'll see if I can get David or someone else to help me getting there.

Originally I used WIMAs, because they are told to sound transparent and are small enough to fit, but with the new .68uF version I used yellow mustards: www.mouser.se/ProductDetail/Cornell-Dubilier/150684J100FC/?qs=UaZr%2f4HME3aTEipABdtQOw%3d%3dBecause they are often used in Neve style eq builds and also in Don Classics NV73eq. Much bigger but still gets crammed in there. I'm thinking about trying .47uF but what I'd really like is a steeper filter, because I would like it to not touch 100-150Hz so much, but very much around 50-70Hz. The NV73eq does that by using inductors.

Theres a guy in gs and I cant remember his name but I think its Aaron who turned his aml ez 1073 into a full on neve clone. He went through many revisions never quite being able to make an exact replica until in the end he used mustard caps throughout, carbon resistors, and even the same wire neve used in the 70s and got it about 90% there. Dude knows his 1073s. He did a ton of cap changes before he was satisfied. So as im sure you know it all matters.

Cool, I'm on tour doing gigs Thu-Sun mostly. Currently having seven more units on my bench (4 with eq and 3 without, HPF only) so it will take probably a while. Hoping to get some info soon on if it's possible to do the HPF with steeper Q. Will let you know if that happens.

Well, I'm picking up two NV73s from groupdiy, and I really would love to mod them into the NV73EQ, but I feel it might be out of my skillset. I would love to talk to someone about possibly doing the mod for me, for the right price, obviously, and it seems like a few of you here have done such a mod! Would anyone be interested?

The DOn Classic NV73 has the option to be out in a 51X series so it can run on 24volts . Any difference in sound form the original 16 volts to the 24 volts? I downloaded the sound samples from DONs site and the unit sounds pretty close to the vintage one, I did find that the original has a bit more bloom in the low end. Would this difference be the transformer size ? Thanks and great post guys !

You are on the right track John if going from 16V to 24V BUT, I think this module uses a DC converter to get +24V from the +/-16V rails so there should be very little difference since the end result both ways is +24V.

From what ive read, the -16v rail acts as ground reference, so the +16v rail becomes 32v relatively speaking. They use a voltage regulator to step it down to 24v.
At least, this is how Colin's Ez1073-500 works

That is what Colin does on the ez1073-500. I think this might be different. I recall a DC to DC convertor. I think Peter Purpose did the same with his 1084 style EQ. Either way, the end result is they run on +24V no matter how they get there.

I guess the advantage of 51x 24v rails is less cost on build parts? or is there a performance difference? does it slow the transient response down being converted up? probably not with electricity moving at 15,000 mps haha
It would seem that for resale value it may be wise to stay away from building at 24v unless u intend to never sell... like me, or sell to a fellow 51x box owner, the 51x boxes are ridiculously stout by any standard!

The Carnhills in the NV73 are the same that was re engineered for the reissue of the 10-series. Interesting though is that AMS/Neve (and a couple others) don't buy them from Carnhill anymore, but instead buy them from China. There's a vivid debate about how close the re issued xformers are to the originals, along with many other components in the design. Personally I stay away from those discussions except when seeing occassional info from Geoff Tanner. I have a rack of eight AMS/Neves here along with a couple of NV73s. The two don't sound exactly the same and don't behave the same when pushed. I have no idea if it's because of the different xformers (Carnhill vs Chinese made) or the choice of resistor value on strapped on the output xformer, or/and any other part of the design, but after a couple of years of road testing I really like the NV73. Enough to have almost built 16, and getting 20(!) more on the bench next week. 10 more for me and the other 10 for a couple of friends. They'll be my portable rig and hopefully later my front end if I move to a larger studio sometime..
