a thread dedicated to Marshall amps and clones I am a bit of a freak when it comes to Marshall heads and cabs. Not necessarily full-on vintage stuff, but modded: Dave Friedman, Martin Golub, David Bray, etc etc. Post your pics/clips/comments, let's rock!

Do you think these guys listen to Mountain at all? I can hear Leslie West all over this. Great stuff! Matt

Yeah - JD is all over the place...He can chicken pick a little too... Lots of notes there...Check out Dave Rowe on upright too...monster... This kind of playing makes me smile! And it's well outside my skill-set, so I see the technique as a bit mysterious. I need to get a Tele and work on it.

Fucking love Zep...Plexi sounds fantastic. Always and forever, my favorite band. Saw them on 21 July 1977 when I was a mere boy of 16. I had been playing guitar for only 4 years, and Page was stunning, beyond understanding, really. On that tour he seemed to be on his own personal Cloud 9 and his solo work was highly (pun intended) "modal". The rest of the band wasn't too shabby, either. Their legendary status is well-earned, IMHO.

Maybe I could get some advice here . . . I have an 83' jcm800 head that I picked up loaded with JJ's in the power and pre sections. It sounds good to me live. It doesn't have any mods, all stock. But when tracking it with a 57, it just doesn't have the balls I want out of it. So it's been sitting while I track with a Sovtek Tube Midget 50h that does give me what I want. The Sovtek is something I experimented on with different tubes and I really have it where I want it. I suspect I need to do the same with the Marshall. I do rock, not metal. Anyone have luck with certain tubes in their jcm800 head from the same era?

There's a milion of them out there, starting with the all-time classic Tube Screamer.

I do have some boxes I could try. I don't generally think of myself as a purist, but I guess I like to go straight in when tracking. I should try some pedals on it though. I'd be pretty dumb of me not to!

I'd be pretty dumb of me not to! I feel the same way. I think it's fair to say that the whole modded Marshall thing is partly driven (over-driven?) by the desire to be "in the box" (head box, that is) and not require pushing the front end of the amp with a pedal. But a lot of people like the sound of a stock Marshall slammed with a Tube Screamer or other OD/distortion box, and this sound has surely made it on many recordings. One of the most famous guitar sounds most likely done this way is 80s-era George Lynch - at least live. When I met him in around 1990 or so, he was beating the crap out of his main head with an OD box. He sounded incredible - and was really really LOUD, go figure. His rig hissed like 100 angry Valkyries. Working on the assumption that his rig was his rig, live or in studio, gating would be essential, and possibly even problematic, given the overall volume level. But he ROCKED, his feel and articulation was (and still is) incredible, and that's what counts. Most of my amps have altered/enhanced gain staging and sometimes even an additional 12AX7 to provide one or two additional stages. No pedals required with these amps.

Tracking tonight with one of my favorite heads: a 1973 50-watt lovingly modified by Martin Golub at LA Sound Designs. Two channels, footswitchable, with dual master vols. Glassy when clean, with just the right amount of nastiness when driven. Sort of like a certain girl I know. And love. Not heavy metal, but classic Marshall: Attachment Deleted

I "needed" a couple of amps for guitar lessons. I used that as an excuse to get 2 of the Marshall 50th anniversary one-watt heads, a JVM-1 and a DSL-1. I paired them with a single Avatar G212 Signature cabinet. The sound is amazing, and they have direct outs to make it easy to record a lesson if I need to. My students are happy!

Long story, but I owned Duane Allman's Marshall 100 from the Live at the Fillmore LP time period. Their management owed me money when I was 15. I used it with an original double stack. I've never felt anything that responded to every nuance of your playing the way that amp did. No pedals, kept volume between 2 and 3 for rhythm, then just cranked it when it was time to crunch or solo, using the volume control for "gain". It was stolen a year and a half later. That has been my lifelong benchmark, and I've only ever encountered one amp like it since. It was a Blankenship Leeds 21, the separate head and 1 X 12" cabinet. It sang just as sweetly, responded the same way, only you didn't get a concussion from being in the same room with it. Hell, I used to rehearse with my 100W stack, but for gigs, it was painful if the club wasn't huge. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to afford the Blankenship, but still hope to get one.

COOL MJB... I understand the great amp experience ...
My late 67 early 68 100 Superlead is BY FAR the best Marshall my bud and I have every played or heard. We have played and owned a combo of possibly over 150 vintage Marshall amps... (I fix a lot of them) It does this amazing mid compression, the bottom is vicious tight, and the high end is bright super articulate and sweet but compresses. (think AC/DC tones meets VH 1984) I have several great other ones and several clones that i LOVE too but this is my reference amp.

"My late 67 early 68 100 Superlead is BY FAR the best Marshall"
Yep!
I've had a number of Marshall's after my "Allman's amp", an original 50W plexi was nice, the 50W combo sucked, it sounded like a screaming cat amplified. The one John Frusciante was using for the Chili Peppers records sounded something like the one I had.

There can be something really special about the so-called "12000-series" circuit. Maybe some voodoo as well. I have a clone of this variant and is sounds pretty good, but someone put a PPMV in it. I think this changed the whole intent of the build.

onea dese days, I'll have a room where I can use a real amp again. Right now, I use a 5 W. Blackstar in my apt. Funny thing, it sounds pretty good, except it hums a bit too much. Previously, I'd bought their 20 W amp, wanting a reasonably priced Marshall/boutique style sound, and it did sound really good, but it too hummed way too much to recording with.
I think some of the mojo is in the hand wiring. My "Allman" 100 couldn't have been more than a couple years old then, so I doubt it was the aging of any parts that gave it the special sound it had.
