I have the new Ampeg BA-12, and the IK plug. I like their BA500 sim. I do love the B-15, but mainly for certain styles of music, Motown, Country ballads, Acoustic singer/songwriter, but for punch, it's a little mushy to me. Sometimes I mic the BA-12, and add some BA-500 in the channel strip. The best currently working bass player I know uses a Gallien-Kruger, but I don't know the model. My main amp is a Gallien Krueger Fusion 550, it works very well recording with the DI. I like the DI method so you can always re amp it later if you like.

Martin, The ad's you saw for the Matchless Thunderman were mine... I originally listed it for 8K, but I did get 5K for it a year later. It was very rare, I believe there were less then 50 made of the version I had. Hence the large selling price. Anyhow, in a nutshell, I only sold it, cause it NEVER sounded as good as any of my 4x B-15's. It was a beautiful amp, built like a tank, and sounded damn good. BUT side by side, it never sounded as great as my B-15's. At the time I also owned, 2 original 69 SVT's, 2 x B-25's, 1 x V4-B, 7 x pre CBS Fender Bassmans all with cabinets, brown, blonde, and black tolex. No matter the music, it was either the SVT's for heavy rock, or the B-15's for everything else.

The trouble with an SVT is the volume. If you don't have a big room that sounds good, there is a lot of power in the SVT that is just wasted. Turning a bass amp up loud in a small booth just makes everything fold in on it self it seems. How do most people use an SVT? Loud? Big room or Small? When KOL were here recording 'an album' they had an SVT in a 4x4 iso locker and it was set on stun. That's what you hear on the record... White Stripes did a similar thing with the SVT in the same space. Listen to the tracks and decide for yourself if its not a rockin bass track.

Hiwatt DR103, Reeves area. I have been exploring the use of guitar amps for bass, as well. Next I am going to try an Egnater Tweaker loaded w/El34s + DI. But I need a cabinet first, probably a 15-inch. Looking for an old Trace. It's funny, I sold music retail in the '80s and we had a mixed opinion of much of the gear made in those days - with exceptions, of course. Now much of that stuff is "collectible". Hmm. And then there's the bass amp for guitar = Fender Bassman Just an observation.

Hey now @johnkenn the Ampeg plug from IK is pretty cool! Definitely not the real thing but it definitely adds some stuff to work with.
I work more with rock stuff and I really like the 8x10 SVT rig for that stuff. My room is too small to make 8x10s sound any good though so I use cab impulses, Kemper profiles, DIs and a bunch of other stuff to make it work. Kemper is by far the closest.

Hiwatt DR103, Reeves area. I have been exploring the use of guitar amps for bass, as well. Gary Moore had Bob Daisley record the bass though his own Marshall on the Still got the Blues album. It worked!

Does anyone have any comment about the reissue Heritage B15? Yep. You can get an original vintage B15 and restore it for 1/3 the price of the Heritage. I'm sure it's great, but it's a bad deal.

I've never heard anythng better than a B15... except two B15s in stereo being fed by an original Boss CE1 chorus ensemble in stereo. Mind blowing.
