I have heard both Real and DIY Tube Traps the only set of DIYs that came close to the ATC's was a guy who admitted that if he put any Value at all on his time spent , the ATCs would have been far cheaper!

That's very true! To DIY a set of tube traps that work is a LOT of effort. It depends how much time you have and whether or not you can better spend your time earning enough $$$ to buy the genuine article. If I was in the US I would buy them no question. Here in Australia they would end up costing 2 to 3 times the US price by the time exchange rate, shipping costs and taxes are taken into account. I have been building mine in between paid sessions so overall it is still effective in $$$ terms. Most of the initial time I spent was researching materials and construction methods and then prototyping. I'm now past that and beginning the construction phase... I wouldn't want to make them for a living however!

I’m specifically looking to set up a quick sound field for recording with 6 - 8 tube traps. I’m considering the DIY route, but I’m really hesitant, as I’ve used the real deal and I would hate to waste time and money on something that underperforms. I guess my main area of concern is nailing the diffusive side — most DIY builds seem to use plastic, but I’ve read a bunch of conflicting info about what type of plastic and whether or not it should be perforated. There’s also the issue of making them airtight... I would love to buy the real thing, they’re just so friggin’ expensive. Hard to come by used, too.

winetree Nice! Any advice for getting these up on stands for recording singers? I'm thinking to just use barstools, but open to other suggestions.

I haven't use them like that yet. The 9" rounds on stands in a circle. Great for vocals.
That was my original intension and will be, but these are going to be half rounds for walls and ceilings to finish the studio build.
Mic stands, some kind of drum hardware? Haven't thought about it yet. You got any ideas?

I think my wallet is going to be hurting for a while!

Where did you happen to find these?

I used this stuff: rti.rockwool.com/products/industrial/prorox-ps-960-wr-tech/?selectedCat=industrial%20-%20all%20africa (but when I used it the trade name was Roxul 1200, at least in Canada) The stuff I used was unfaced - just rock wool, no plastic or paper wrapping. I built half rounds of various diameters on the wall of a smallish booth, with the centre 90 degrees covered in 6 mil plastic vapour barrier for diffusion. I also did 90 degree sections in the corners, with the middle 45 degrees being diffusive. I haven't measured or compared to any commercial product, but it seems to work OK - I'm happy with it, anyway. I have a few spare sections that I intend to build free standing tube traps out of eventually.
I got mine from an industrial supplier - mostly by lucking out and finding a salesman who was interested in the unusual application. If you can't find a supplier in your area who will play ball - and many of them will not even talk to non-commercial buyers or deal in small lots - I'd see if I can find an industrial HVAC company (or someone else who might purchase this stuff) and see if you can piggy back on an order or purchase off cuts from a job.
Cheerz, John

Where did you happen to find these? ZORO.com Many sizes. They ship them. If you look closely at the picture , you can see they are half rounds put together with the plastic wrap. No cutting involved for half round absorbers.

I had a customer who bought a bunch of weird Quick loc stands years ago. I can’t remember where I saw them but last week I saw a couple of used ones for about $100ea.

The ones I got (in Canada) were 1 metre - I'd guess the standard is 1m for metric jurisdictions and 3 feet for imperial.
My $0.02 (Canadian), John

Because they are intended as pipe insulation, you specify internal diameter (eg pipe diameter) and wall thickness when ordering. But the length is standard - 1m - for all diameters and thicknesses. Regards, John

DO NOT use concrete form tubes (sonotube) - they are not useful if you want to implement Tube Trap (TM) type traps.

Thanks winetree. Those stands look nice for the money. How are you fabricating the top and bottom plate?

Bumping this old thread. I need some tube traps for the new tracking room, half rounds for the walls and rounds for the corners.
I have a tube trap attack wall, ceiling and wall tube traps that turned an unlistenable area into the Harrison MR3-Radar C.R. An amazing sound field.
I found this new video with some new ideas.

I definitely explored the DIY route pretty thoroughly a while back — that video was one I kept referring back to. There's also a guy named Marshall Deasy who sells kits on Reverb. I spoke to him over the phone a few times and he was super knowledgeable and friendly. Ultimately, I ended up snagging 10 used Studio Traps for $1800 last January. One of the best recording investments I've ever made, period.
