I bought some Jensen Torando 100 speakers that were advertised at 8 ohm but I got home and they’re 16! Whoops! I need a pair of 8 ohm speakers so the search continues…I think my buddy Guthrie Trapp is just going to give me some because he said he has a “pallet” of them in storage 😆 Otherwise, I ordered tubes for the Vox AC30 because after working for a bit it blew the fuse again. Most likely the rectifier and/or power tubes but since it’s such a PITA to take it apart to swap them I decided just to get a whole new set. Also got some for my Goodsell Super 17 IV I’ve definitely been in guitar/guitar amp/speaker cab mode. I don’t know why. Needed a change from sniffing around for recording stuff I guess! Check the solder joints on the tube sockets. I had a cracked joint and it was doing the exact same thing that you’re experiencing! Fixed it right up!

A year or so back I finally tried the U87ai and U87i models - like them both actually and didn't expect it considering the varying opinions online. My goal has been to build up a little experience with my own ears for some of the classics.
Following that, I just picked up a used TLM170 i model from Guitar Center (surprisingly) that actually worked for a quite fair price - it's got a red badge but is the version with the (apparently more desirable by some) through-hole electronics, only played with it for a short while but already thinking it's a keeper. Super smooth frequency response and it might be the most EQ-able mic I've ever tried; have been able to boost in sensitive mid-range where I usually choose to avoid with essentially no side-effects to my ear. It's like you can shape the mic however you want it to be. I'd love to compare it to the newer TLM170 R version someday.
Something I really like about the mic is the built-in mount --> so convenient to not need a big shock mount in addition and it fits in similar size wood box as the U87 models, and so many polar patterns to choose from. Just a super cool little mic.
I've liked it paired with John Hardy Twin Servo and using the Buzz Audio Zodiak EQ (but in in the box also been very easy on the ears). Adding some tube compression (been using the older Manley ELOP) can bring in some character that might be missed from some of the other mics. Starting to understand why some have said this is their "desert island" mic.

1987 50W Silver Jubilee full stack/ matching 2x12 cabs. It has some interesting mods.... Bassman transformer, clipping diodes removed and a master volume for the clean channel. Sounds killer at a bedroom volume, albeit a moderately loud one.

Really something special, it’s an inspiring instrument.

The two Disruptor 545 are new (and nopers rthey ain't as mauve as muh phone made them out to be). One of the 2531 deessers is also new. I gots me a dual mono pair now, and the twisted brain cavorts I meandered into to justify a second one (stero/dual mono) are proving to be totally legit. That 545 needs moar time on bench, but the paired 2531 are simply stunning. Like, a variable kinda wide band HF squashmallow (Feed Back) but also a HF pucnher-upper if you put it in Feed-forward mode. The "Blend" (FF + FB) is a beauty on sweet treats like some things that have intermittent transients as well as drone-esque stuff. Like E-pinai, keyes, snare, et. Wanna hear it? :-) Dry then Wet. LUFS Normalized. https%3A//soundcloud.com/poppaflavor/avec-home-dry-lrhttps%3A//soundcloud.com/poppaflavor/avec-home-xqp545-xqp2531-sa-tubedrve-ms

I finally bought a Beyer M88. For all of the talk around here it had BETTER BE GOOD The new ones are very, very good. The 1980's original silver basket ones are a bit special imho. Which ever you got I'm sure you'll be thrilled - it's a superb mic! Stick it in a kick drum, track a bass cab, track a guitar cab, track percussion then stick it on a tall stand and cut a world class vocal! If I could only have one mic to make an album it would be a Beyer M88.

I should get an Andreas Grosser clone of the Siemens SM204 next month, which is essentially an early C12 with Henry Radio transformers. The mic comes equiped with a Haune capsule, what appears to be a Telefunken ECC801S tube, and a special order Haufe-made, Henry Radio 2148 replica.
I heard the mic, and well... The very few guys that talked about SM204 Voxo clone online were not lying. It's very musical.
Do you guys know where I could buy a Telefunken ECC801S spare ?
Thanks !

Stop the presses. This is about the stuff I did not buy this month. And that would be not a single plug-in. Doubt that will be the case in the month coming up. We shall see. Cheers, Geoff

A second Spectra 1964 C610. Such an amazing limiter/compressor.

I recently picked up the Interphase Audio EQ2.2VU, which (as I understand it) has the same inductor EQ tech inside (but with faders rather than knobs). Highly Recommended! It has a great inductor tone. I have some older inductor EQs (KT DN22, DN27), but they a re bit noisy and I was hoping to get something more modern and quite with additional features which would still bring that rich indictor sound. This. Is. It. Bruno at Interphase Audio was GREAT to work with. I initially purchased the NDUCER EQ, but realized right after purchasing that what I *actually* wanted/needed was the EQ2.2 VU. It's basically the EQ section of their console, and as such has some interesting routing quirks that are proving incredibly powerful. Fortunately Bruno and Interphase Audio Team were very accommodating, canceled my NDUCER order and built and delivered a new EQ2.2VU within a couple weeks. Fantastic communication at each step of the way. Here is a description Interphase Audio posted on on of their videos in response to a question: So I've been using the HPF and LPF and Tilt to shape prior to compression in the signal chain... and then I can take that post-compression and *go back in to the second set of I/Os* to use the 4 band inductor EQ to polish the tone. It's basically two full EQs... Like 4 dual mono channels with flexibility to assign the filers, tilt or inductors to either of the 4 dual mono bands independently.

poppaflavor. Thanks for posting this. I was looking at their 500 series but the flexibility you describe in your use case is awesome!

So following up on the Shadow Hills Equinox older unit with no mono to buying a board from SH to get mono on the last eight. Got the new board in that I bought from SH that is very interesting in that it's carefully matched, etc. Looks interesting and will mix through it tomorrow with a mix I finished last week through the Speck LiLo. Everything with 2-bus still going through the Pyra Sum with the UTA's making up gain. Old board:

They just came in the mail today but will put them through the paces over the weekend. I wanted something a little different from my KM84’s and AKG C451 & C460’s. I recently got a Schoeps M221 and I’ve enjoyed using it because I’ve used KM84’s for pretty much everything for the last decade and needed a little variety. Curious to try the Soyuz as overheads as well.

Okay kind of funny story: So I decided to build a point to point LA2a or 2. Ordered some parts and spent 2 days digging through boxes in storage looking for the Hakko 888, found the desoldering gun, but no luck. I’m sitting in the living room beat to hell sharing my frustration with my wife who then reminds me “ Don’t you remember, with the move you gave it to that kid in a wheelchair who was learning to solder along with that old de- soldering gun.” Soooo I ordered a new one from Hakko USA, best price out there & they got it shipped today!

New board: Did a mix today. LiLo, Chandler and Equinox. The lowend on the Equinox board was immediate. Gotta live with all three a bit more tomorrow but will report back.

I’ve been doing something similar with La3a…just too distracted with things at the moment to keep up regular progress. Good luck with it!
