No they are different. The ez1084 is more elegant sounding. It uses highend caps film caps and the ez1073 leans more toward the vintage design.
My 2 favorite eq's are the Drip Pultec and the ez1084. That being said the ez1073 rules.

I built a Drip pultec with Sowter trannies. I even shelled out for the expensive Sowter power transformer.
After all, I have to say I prefer the low and high end on my API 550A's and definitely the high end on my Electrodyne 511's. The highs sound a little sharp to me on the Pultec and the low end is so hard to manipulate to satisfaction. The highs on the LC53A I built are also preferable IMHO.
Obviously, you can build them as you like. I opted for CC resistors in the high voltage section and chose Sprague atom caps. Perhaps someone could recommend me some components to help ?
I was really psyched about owning a "real" pultec but in the end i am a little disappointed. It was not exactly cheap either! Don't get me wrong - it is not bad just, well, OK what's the big deal about Pultecs?

I definitely don't want to give up on it. I would really appreciate any help with suggestions to get the best out of it. I only put 2 carbon comp resistors in the plate resistors of the 12AX7 (R10 and R6) on the advice of Mr. RG Keen from www.geofex.com. I had read a paper by him on the use of carbon comps and he very kindly got back to my enquiry. In his opinion these are the only resistors that see enough signal to be worth the while. I put the following tubes in, can anyone recommend any upgrades? 1 x Electro Harm. 12AX7 gold pin ($20) 1 x JJ 12AU7 gold pin ($20) 1 x6X4WA JAN ($10) many thanks pace don't mean to hijack the thread, perhaps I should make a new one!

Don't worry about hi jacking, if it go's too far off the path, I can move it for us.
I would contact Christian whitmore, he'll hook u up with top notch NOS tubes cheap, and can and will answer any q's in detail, he's a real expert, IME tubes REALLY matter.
All that said, Dan is the man on this, he's not easy to please, and he's very pleased with his pultec.

Tubes make a huge difference. I got my tubes and all my tubes from Bowie! Tell him what you got and what you want and he can start to help push your tone in a direction you like.
What caps did you use? The stock bom?

i did (ez1073). I also built a pair of the 500-series ones before he stopped making them as kits. Case from Dan Deurloo was around $150 including faceplate. Kit from colin was the end price for me was a little less than $900, after shipping/tax for all this extra stuff: screws & standoffs www.pololu.com/catalog/product/2088 x 4 www.pololu.com/catalog/product/1962 x 1 power receptacle wiring terminals for grounding to the case 100mV quickblow fuse grounding wire radio shack knobs If you're in the states, Colin ships via TNT and the freight charges were between $50-100. but it showed up like 2-3 days after i ordered it. I'm in NYC, colin is in england. Jeff built some of those Pultec boxes. the builds for both the 500 and the rack were SUPER easy. he really takes the hard part out of the process. all resistors are pre-cut, every component is in a bag and labeled. you don't even have to think. just find the right part, and put it in the right hole. no measuring or anything. it's awesome. Jeffs kits are harder to build because he doesn't label components, so you gotta measure 'em yourself to figure out what value they are (for resistors at least) @matkatmusic, so $900/ch all in? Is there a built in PSU inside the box or external?

+1 for AML ez1073... these things rock. Just switched from 500 series to 19" rack.

My ez1073's 19" are done...final elma knob came in yesterday from jsteiger. Many thanks to dandeurloo for the great looking cases and direction along the way. This was my first DIY project and I'm thrilled it all works! They look so great (again thanks to Dan and Jeff) and sound killer!! Attachment Deleted

Tony, I really love these ez1073's. I had the 500 series before and I think they sound the same. The 19" look a 100 times better though :-). I don't miss my BAE's at all. I don't have either of the others u mentioned.

I paid a friend to help me drill the cases and do final wiring so I've got more into them.

Seriously, these look/sound as good/better than the BAE (which I'm a fan of) for half the price. No brainer, IMO.
