Hey Everyone,
So I’ve been tossing around the idea of picking up a mandolin and learning to play for a while now. I don’t currently play, but the hope would be that down the road I would be able to accompany myself during live performances of the old Italian and Neapolitan songs I frequently perform and use it from some studio recordings as well. I have a friend I work with that can play mandolin on my recordings, but doesn’t own one.
I’m just not sure where to start looking. I don’t want to spend a ton of money on one, but I also don’t want a crappy one that won’t sound good in performance or on record. I think I’d most likely look at and modern A body as opposed to an F Body or Neapolitan mandolin. It think it will be easier for performance, etc. Not sure about the sound hole though. I think some come with a built in pick up.
Anyway, any brands or specific mandolin recommendations? Tips? Thoughts? A body vs F body? Thanks!

What’s your actual budget? You’ll get more bang for your buck with an A style than a similarly priced F style - I always suggest an A for a first mando.
Stay away from anything you’ll find at Guitar Center.
I’m also not a fan of the Kentucky brand or most of the Loar stuff.
Mid to higher end Eastman models sound and play pretty good.
I got a smoking deal on my J Bovier F style and it’s got a great sound.
If I were you I’d start cruising the classified section over at mandolincafe.com and just do tons of research.
As always, it’s an acoustic instrument, and you have a discerning ear, I don’t think you’ll be happy with anything that costs less than $600.

You can't go wrong with a higher end Eastman F style. These strings pair well. www.stringsandbeyond.com/dexpcophbrma.html (not recommending them as a seller, even though they might be great people, just grabbed the first link I saw to the strings)

Eastman seems to be the one everyone recommends.

Love to hear you play/sing "Mandolin Wind", as you progress, Vincent. That could become part of your live show too-great tune! Chris

I've always been a little curious about mandolin, but never took the plunge. I'm planning on doing a Nashville tuning acoustic soon, so a mandolin will have to wait.
