Just repaired one of these I got for cheap because it was an early model that suffered from the notorious bias failure the early versions had once they got older. I also changed a couple resistors to get the Marshall sound to come out a little more.
Sounds pretty rocking even though I'm only running it as a 50w amp with two el34s instead of the normal 4.

I've got a 2000 DSL. Use it ALL the time. My most used amp by a mile.

I usually pair it with a recto cab and not the Marshall.

I usually pair it with a recto cab and not the Marshall. Rectos usually have V30's in them and the marshalls have greenbacks. I typically like V30's on marshalls too as the greenbacks can get too screechy.

Recto can just feels more solid.
It's really perfect for a lot of the punkish stuff I work on.

I finally got this thing running at 100w. Had to replace the octal sockets because one was corroded beyond repair.
This is probably one of my favorite amps now. It really does sound better running at 100w too. The extra distortion from driving the output tubes seems to really smooth the overall tendency to have too much grit.
It also seems to really like an old ds-1 distortion a lot.

Also, that amp sounded pretty mediocre, except at the settings someone had written on the face plate in sharpie. Same studio has sharpie marks on their 1176, also very good!

I have the modern made in Vietnam DSL 100W head, it's a wonderful amp. I also have the 40 combo of that amp.
Speaker cabinet makes a big difference. My favorite cab right now is the 1960A standard cab from Marshall, with the G12-T75 speakers. Gives it a fuzzy, relaxed, resonant low end sound. It's a sound you hear on records. Fugazi, Smashing Pumpkins, that kind of stuff. With the right guitar you can nail those tones with this amp/cabinet.
The clean channel is probably a little bit better with the Avatar cabinet, which I am in the process of adding new speakers to (Texas Heat, Classic Lead 80).
The comobo almost sounds like a different amp, I have a G12M-65 Creamback in that one. It's easier to haul to small gigs.
Both amps are very smooth on the top, not zingy. More thick and rich or something.
Anyway, yeah, I'm a fan. A no fuss amp. Plug it in and rock. Clean or dirty, pedals, whatever.

2 JMP 50s in the hall downstairs, belonging to my guitarist and his son. Bob's is EL34s. Steve's is 6550s, I think.

The DSL 50 (JCM 2000) was my first Marshall amp. I still have it and love it, even though I now have a '79 JMP 50, an '88 Plexi reiusse and a Silver Jubilee too. My DSL is the UK-built model with a spring reverb tank, not the later one that came from Asia with digital reverb. Jeff Beck used to play it too, he had a couple on stage back in the day.
