I'm just running a KRK 10" sub right now...how much different are subs, really? When you're rolling off anything over 80HZ, do you really need to put $1000 into a sub?

I'd think the KRK would be fine for most things. The human ear can't discern much detail from below 100hz or so, but a poor sub might add too much distortion and "muddy" up the low end. Most earbuds and things can't even reproduce audio that low. I'd go for mixing so that the low-mids carry a lot of the weight with harmonics. Google "missing fundamental".

good question, John. I've only ever owed the NHT Pro subs (pair that can be run in mono or stereo.) I didn't feel the need to do a sub woofer shootout! Would be good to hear from those that have.

littlesicily those are my absolute favorite subs. I'm not sure if it's the crossover in the amp, the way the room was tuned, or what, but every time I hear a system with B-20's they feel like full range speakers instead of NF's w/ a sub. Now I have a NHT S-00 worked into my setup, and again it just feels a little disconnected. The worst subs I've heard are the Genelec whatevers...Man, I can't stand Genelec. I know that goes against everything Tad Donely would say right now.

I had a fellow engineer recommend them to me years ago and I snagged one of the last sets from NHT's new stock before they quit production on them. List was like $2k for the set when it came out.

I took advantage of that sale as well. It's a shame they stopped making Pro monitors, but glad I got a little discount! If you ever end up selling them, I'm your guy.

Interesting thread, are you guys using subs in line while mixing? I never have, and i'm curious if im missing out? I always have. But I was using the set that sic has, and they come with a remote that easily will bypass them so you can check your mix without any low end help. With my current setup I don't enjoy mixing with a sub nearly as much. The whole low end feeling detached thing really has been throwing me off.

I have for a long time...You can defeat the sub with a pedal. Just makes it more rewarding to me...Of course, I always check with an d without...

I have mine in. Recently got a Crane Song Avocet and have the sub on a speaker out and often bypass to check things out. Got my ProAc's in full range, but the subs are LPF'd.

I've used a 15" floor firing subwoofer for about 20 years now. It's connected passivly to my modified JBL 4408A speakers. It has a 2 meter sized cab, no vents, a special dual voice coil subwoofer that does 25 hz and a custom passive crossover set to 90 hz.
Smaller subs don't have the excursion to reach 25 hz. Most of them have a bump at the roll-off point as well. Sloppy bass can be more of a problem than not having enough.

If I were to get a sub it would be the Focal (especially since I have focal 6be's) but I do believe the sub needs to be fast and clean and not add bloom this is why I would choose the Focal be sub. That being said, I don't mix with a sub but would use it for tracking and impressing clients(if I had any) ROFL...

You also must calibrate the SPL outputs to precisly match the mains speakers. A miss set sub is worse than no sub.

When you're rolling off anything over 80HZ, do you really need to put $1000 into a sub? Yes! Subwoofers vary all over the place - low frequency response, maximum output (SPL), and especially distortion. Cheaper models often have audible port "chuff" noise at high volumes. When I bought my first sub I auditioned several models from a local high-end hi-fi store, and the cheaper ones were "not good" to put it bluntly. Now, there are hundreds of models out there, and I have experience with maybe five or six. But I can tell you that I wasn't satisfied until I got an SVS subwoofer that cost $2,000. --Ethan
