What is your take on any of the cheeper Gretsch hollow bodies like the G5420T Electromatic? I had a friend that was playing one of the newer Gretsch, and he seemed to like it.

I bought a used G5420T for $500 with case, and really like it. Haven't had tuning issues, and it's a different flavor from my Teles. Live it's a blast using the controllable feedback and Bigsby (licensed); for lead work above the 12th fret it's not great, but it's fun.
there's lots of people telling you online how you have to upgrade the tuners, bridge, pickups; for me it's fine for now. At some point I may get the TV Jones wiring kit and add a treble bleed circuit as the treble rolloff from the master volume is pretty significant.
I've played a real 6120 once for about an hour, and so I can't compare the less expensive Gretsch to the real deal, but for starting out with this style of body and pickups, I think it's a great buy for the money used.

I've played a few Electromatics, not a whole lot, but several.
My main critism is that I don't much like the pickups, they sound "cheap" compared to the real thing. Replace the pickups with some nice TV Jones and you're good to go.

I agree that TV Jones pups are a mandatory upgrade. Some models have had them standard. I have replaced with direct equivalents on the Setzer model I had and on my falcon moved from stock humbuckers to TVJ single coil pups.
It really comes alive.
For what it’s worth, both of mine have never felt like the best made Guitars and both have floating bridges. They stay in tune well with mild bigsby use

Interesting - my G5420T has a pinned bridge, which makes string changing easier and it stays in tune. I do need to pencil the nut.

I like my cheap Gretsch made in China. I forgot what the number was, but it's the solid body with the Bigsby. Silver sparkle paint. Stays in tune, and it does sound surprisingly good for made in China, paid $350 for it new. The music store was having a going out of business sale. It was a steal at that price. I think it listed at $749. This was years ago when I bought it. They had USA models as well starting around $1500, but sold out of them so fast I couldn't get to the store in time. I still like the USA models much better, but I'm happy with the setup and tone of this one. Plays like butter. My luthier loves this guitar. He keeps asking me when I'm going to sell it to him.

I had an orange hollow one about 10 years ago, didn't really like it.
I had a Pro Jet 5 years before that, liked it, shouldn't have sold it, also electromatic. I'll try to find another one eventually.

for the most part, rubbish. But I did find a damaged pro jet that had a soul. I had to gut the electronics and a friend installed a set of 60s deArmonds and a '65 Bigsby B5 which both made a massive difference and gave it an amazing sound. I use it often.

I have a couple Gretsch guitars. A G5220 Jet and a G6128T-59 Duo Jet. Both are very good guitars. there are things I like about both. For the money, I don't think the G5220 can be beat. It's very well made and the pickups sound better than the 65 Broadtrons in the 6228. The 6128T-59 is a guitar I have wanted for a very long time. So far, it's a love and not-so-love relationship. It's just very different than my other guitars. I do love the soft V neck. very comfortable.

This is a general Gretsch reply. I own a G5220 Jet and I liked it so much that I bought a massively expensive G6128T-59 Duo Jet. I like them both. I like the Duo Jet for what it is but I have to say that the 5220 is easier to play and I actually like the Blacktop Broadtrons pickups. They are somewhere between a Filtertrons and a PAF. I got the cheap Gretsch because I wanted a different flavor of guitar without breaking the bank. The build quality is very good. It does not feel cheap. I did replace the pots on the 5220. The original ones just don't feel good or have the right taper. As you would expect, the Duo Jet is in a different class. Not so much in the build but in the woods used. I do like ebony fingerboards! Anyway... I don't think you can go wrong with an Electronic. I've thought of buying more myself. Very well made.
