I have a mac mini. It only has one Thunderbolt connection. (WTF?) So, I've been using two monitors - one out of the HDMI and one out of the Thunderbolt port via Mini Display cable. Since I've gotten the Apollo Twin, I have to use the Tbolt port for the Apollo...since the Apollo doesn't have more than one tbolt connection (WTF?) I can no longer use a second monitor. MAJOR BUMMER. I could solve all of this by purchasing a Thunderbolt Display - I could go thunderbolt cable from computer to Tbolt display then to the Apollo...I think I could do that...but I could be wrong. But that's $1000... Maybe the solution is just to get a big ass TV and hook er' up via HDMI. I prefer two monitors - I can drag the mix window over to the other screen and it just locks right in...I dread the idea of having to split the screen...sigh. Anyway, does this work decently? Does it look terrible? Any suggestions? BTW - I'm a total knucklehead...I bought the Belkin Thunderbolt Hub. I thought, "Awesome! Two Tbolt connections on the back...(along with a plethora of others)". I didn't take into account I'd have to use one for the Apollo and one for the to plug in to the mac mini...therefore leaving me in the exact same predicament. Sigh...Maybe I could buy a hub for the hub??? I'm looking into a USB to DVI adapter. That would allow me to connect the second monitor via USB for around $70...but maybe it's just time to upgrade to a big TV.

Since i have LCD tv, it is my main monitor. Nothing wrong with that. OK, i am on PC, not Mac, but well, it's all digital, and it looks perfectly fine on a big Samsung or LG. The computer monitor i use as a second monitor comes in handy, but TVs are cheap nowadays - and big, which i consider a good thing... I think i could live without the second monitor, not without the tv display. I don't get younger, and this way i can have a bigger distance to the display and my eyes do like that...

PS: i think it's a matter of size. At HD resolution, i can live happily with a full Sonar on one screen. I thought i couldn't, but nowadays i often recognize that i use the second monitor more for reading emails or having a facebook browser on screen while changing views on the main display. Did not think it would come like this, but the tv display is big enough and it seems easier to switch views than turn the head all the time.....

You know, there might be an easy solution for me...I could just get a USB to DVI adapter for the second monitor. I really don't think I would like one monitor. I've got a 32" in the bedroom I might try out tonight though.

I like how you complain about the Apollo not having a second tbolt connection and not the mac.. Fanboy much? Anyway, even though thunderbolt can have 4x 5Gbit(same speed as USB3.0) lanes or 2x 10Gbit lanes.. Most breakout boxes seem to only have two TB connectors... I generally find the aliasing and such on TVs to be less than adequate. I used to use two monitors but I have since decided that one larger monitor is much better.

I agree - wish it had another one...but it is a Mac Mini... With that being said, the Mac having an additional one seems less logical than peripherals down the chain. It would be more likely that any of those would be daisy chained...

I use a little Vizio tv that is set up on DVI and I include that in my Aggregate as an output. I'll switch over to it when I'm mixing, nice to have.

I think that's what he got. Only had 2 thunder ports. Ont to the computer and one to the Apollo. Still not gaining a port.

That's the one I bought and having to send back. It's a little misleading. It says two Tbolt ports, but it's really only one, because you have to use one of the ports to connect the tbolt to the hub...

The issue is that it's a docking station, not a hub.

There's mixed thoughts on this. I've done it before at other studio's and it was one of the WORST sessions of my life. I think it depends on the TV and how you are interfacing it. I'd suggest you try it out before you buy it. Or have a room you need a TV in in case it doesn't work out. I've thought about it many times, but after a couple of bad experiences, passed on it. I hope it works out well for you though. Cause big azz monitors ROCK!!!

Wow. I just saw a UHD TV at best buy. I will never be the same. $2999 and might just be worth it. You know, I use my tv every day...my sta only every other day. Hmmm.

LG makes some nice TV's, my personal favorite is Samsung. Not a single problem with them.

No problems with resolution, Herbie? Nope. Come right out of the HDMI port on the mini right into the tv at 1080p. Clear as a small monitor. I think I only gave 499 or something for that tv a Walmart. Then it's got another HDMI port on the tv that I plug the cable box into. Hit a button on the remote and it's family movie night through Symphony converters and some kick ass speakers!

Soooo...I have a 720p LED that I hooked up just to get an idea...and it was pretty awful...I mean baaad. I assume that's because it was 720? I bought a USB to HDMI/DVI connector and now I'm able to free up the Tbolt slot for the Apollo... BUT - the USB to DVI don't worky too great. I get glitches and interference occasionally and I SWEAR it slowed my computer down a little. Sigh...I could use it - it doesn't happen all the time...but it is definitely not an elegant solution. So, cowboycoalminer you think the 720 is what made it look so bad? Do you know what equivalent 1080 is? Is it like 1920x1080? I'm really tempted to just say screw it and get the Thunderbolt display...but I'm not sure I would like that as much as two monitors...
