I hadn't listened at length in a while - did this morning...but man, what a killer band. One of my favorites...
I don't think they're recordings ever slayed me as sonically superior - but I don't think I've ever really had it other than cassette, CD or mp3. The arrangements and performances are just awesome. How would you guys rate their albums sonically? To me, it never seems to sound as good as say - the Beatles or the Who...

Sonically I never thought their albums were great but I didn't care because I couldn't believe what i was hearing!! As you say the arrangements were so dense I was concentrating on picking that shit apart to notice that the drums sounded weird for example. Hated the JD's bass sound but what a fantastic player. Loved BM's guit tones and FM's vocals were, well I don't know how to describe them...symphonic! Other worldly? Never thought the albums sounded amazing but they sounded great for the time imo. By the way I stopped listening after A Day at the Races.

Yep. Never thought of the recordings themselves sounding great. Some of their songs however, are timeless masterpieces. One Vision, for example, sounds like a rock symphony to me. Simply astonishing creative minds in that lot.

Saw them six times during the 70s/80s. They were one of the greatest performing groups ever, always supremely well-rehearsed and high-energy on stage. Freddie was one of the top-five frontmen of the era, IMHO. And they ROCKED:

I liked their non radio stuff of the 70's Fight from the inside etc.. I always thought they sounded realistic, which could have been a strategy to make them sound as good live.

Anyone else here ever get their hands on the multi-track of Killer Queen?
It really is just in the playing and recording. You dump a plate reverb on that mix, add some flanging and with a little level automation you should be pretty much at home base for the final mix. Not even kidding.

Where would one find a multitrack for something like that?

huge fan, i always tripped on how their albums were 2 faced, meaning one song would be mehhh, then the next would be something like killer queen, and your jaw drops! I wore out many copies of news of the world, sheer heart attack.

magesy4k.com/audio-samples/queen-killer-queen-multitrack.html^^ This link appears to have the right contents. I was given them by a friend. There's apparently Bohemian Rhapsody floating around too. For those that download, turn up a 3 second plate send (D-Verb will do, PT fags)with no LPF or high shelving and a short predelay. Stick a bunch on the vocals and the room mic, turn the room mic UP. You hearing it, yet?

My fave queen album is Queen 2. Side white is written by May and Side Black is by Mercury. Absolute wall of sound and extremely dense. Almost punk queen! 5 years later the first major label recording I played on was produced by the guy that produced one of the sides!

Symphonic is a good word for them. Freddie's operatic flair along with Brian May's eg arrangements. Man - listen to try the solo in Killer Queen. Very orchestral. Also, it seems like Brian even plays like a string player - the tight vibrato...interesting.

Also, it seems like Brian even plays like a string player - the tight vibrato...interesting. Brian's solos are interesting because the internal structure is sort of classical within itself. Killer Queen's solo is Sonata-esque in that you get 2 ideas, the main one being a sort of 16 bar phrases with an AA1BA2 structure and the second being the more lyrical dialogue part with all the bends. Both are sort of internally self referential ideas, which keeps the repetition interesting and the solo extremely structured feeling. Throw in a few parallel minor chords - the iv in particular - and you've got a good jab at a short classical interlude. His nasally guitar tone is kinda cool too. I sort of like it cause I don't think I'd ever use it - you know? It's weird, but it's brave.

As a guitarist, this:
May's tone is one I would never choose, but it kicks total ass. The vocal arrangement is not too bad, either.
