I could be mistaken, but isn't the 740 essentially the encode section of a Dolby A system, set up for use as a processor because some people were dragging out their old Dolby A units and using just the encode system for that?

Yesss but there is a mod that is a pretty cool vocal effect, where you been John?

No, you can’t make A do this. They do mention it's a build out of SR processing.

So is it essentially like a multiband expander? I would wonder if you could simulate it with something like Pro-MB.

One thing that's always been true for me with mixes, turn it on and I'll turn shakers, tambourines and cymbals down a hair.

I have a Standard Audio Stretch and it’s awesome for this +1 - Standard Audio makes some of the most fun and sonically useful gear we've used...! Great stuff and the STRETCH is no exception! Super deep module considering it's simple control scheme!

Super deep module considering it's simple control scheme! The guys at Standard Audio have some of the coolest and original Vintage inspired gear that flies under most peoples radar. The fact that their prices are so reasonable is just insane.

Not bad for the price. In the demo it sounds like it technically nails what it is trying to do, it just misses that something the hardware does that brings life to a vocal , don’t know what exactly what it is but I miss it.

How different is the 740 compared to the Type A? I have the AudioThing Type A and its pretty cool, though I don't use it all the time.

McDSP AE600 Active EQ - may not sound the same as the Dolby unit, but with dynamic processing should allow for great flexibility. Plus free demo to try it out and hear for yourself. www.mcdsp.com/plugin-index/ae600/

2019 was a lesson for me.
Never say never when it comes to modern day plug ins...
At the moment I ask myself what happens if I send some dynamic EQ into my SPL Charisma and I mix this in parallel to the LV. Have to try this next time-...
Anyone can deliver a sample with and without the 740?

Whether it matters or not to anyone is a different question. So much cool gear under the radar that will never be cloned.

That's funny I was thinking about people including you with really impressive collections that defy the clone wars. I agree with you a lot of the so called "clone" gear is sort of more like "imitation" gear not that I don't own any of it, because I do own some. Especially when it comes to my plugins. I just watched the Vintage King video of the RMX16 shootout, the vintage, vs the new 500 series, vs the plugin. Once again I was taken away by the original. The other ones were sort of simulacrums. I can't afford a whole lot of that kind of stuff. But I certainly can do my own version of unique with my DIY skills. I have some stuff here that no one else really has.

I thought the 500 series hung in there pretty well. Little cleaner maybe. The plugin sounded lousy in comparison, though if I hadn't heard the HW version 1st, I probably would think it sounds ok.

That was my exact takeaway also. The 500 would be great for the money. The plugin is something that could only really be accepted in a vacuum, that is, not knowing what the other two sound like. Just restating what you said.

Audiothing Type A is a secret weapon. Saves the day on many vocal tracks! I've had goos success with it too. One weird thing I did was on a jazz record. There was a song with brushes, and I had stereo OH that were LDCs and a mono ribbon. The condensers were kind of room-y, but on a brushed tune I didn't like the romminess. The ribbon, however, wasn't cutting it on the brushes. I tried Type A on the ribbon and it was PERFECT.

I think with a lot of clones, and plugins the thing is to evaluate them in context. I don't expect any of them to really sound exactly the same. But if they sound good, and do something positive, and different from other things I have, thats great.

I am in the weird position of admiring great hardware and being nearly 100% in the box when it comes to mixing. So I get what you're saying.

We were referencing Pink Floyd’s “Brain Damage” and I swear I could hear it on the drums! Not sure if it even existed back then, probably not...

My mixing is hybrid, but most things EQ and compression are in the box. I use the console to sum, with an analog bus comp, and I often use outboard FX and record them back into PT for recalls I track with my hardware as needed/desired.
