I was watching Pensados Place, the episode with Fabian Marascuillo.
I was watching to hear what his gear for vocals was. Whether you like the music he mixes or not, his vocal processing is amazing. It cuts no matter how dense the music is and has this unique glisten.
Anyways he basically said his magic item for vox is the Dolby 740. These aren't being made anymore and the used prices are pretty high.
Any plug in alternatives?
Is the clariphonic similar?

I recently saw a Dolby A unit going for what seemed to be a very reasonable price...

Well what does a Dolby 740 do? What do people use it for?
I’m not finding a ton of info on it.

Well what does a Dolby 740 do? What do people use it for? I’m not finding a ton of info on it. Im not sure how to explain it. Lots of studios use it for mastering but some big time engineers use it as a secret weapon for vocals. The amazing engineer Fabian Marasciullo(his vocal processing is amazing) said this about the 740 in an interview with Sound on Sound: "Finally, I sent all the vocals through a Dolby 740. It's an old Dolby unit that was made for film music. It acts like a compressor, but it's an EQ. You can set it so that when the guy sings harder, he sounds a bit brighter. It's a really interesting device, and it gives me a glistening on the voice that no other EQ can give me."

In another article he said this about the 740:
"I run all my vocals through the Dolby 740, which comes up on an effects track called 'Master 17'. The Dolby is a piece of outboard that I love. Every time one comes up on eBay, I buy it, so I now have 12 of them! I haven't found anything that can do what it does, which is giving me a particular shimmer on the vocals. It acts like a compressor, but it's actually an EQ. You can set it so that when the vocals are louder, they sound a bit brighter. "
On his interview on Pensados Place he said it would be his desert island gear piece for vocals.

Well what does a Dolby 740 do? What do people use it for? I’m not finding a ton of info on it. Isn't it an exciter? Not at all. I posted some info above. Ive used them twice, you have to use the threshold knob to find the sweet spot and it has a noise reduction knob as well. What it does to vocals is magical. I was in a session and the chain was C800g>Portico Channel Strip>Audioscape 76A. The backing music was so dense and when the vocals were ran through the 740 it was an ohhhh man I want! moment. If there's a true plug in emu I'd be all over it!

from a reverb post reads like a marketing blurb ?
Dolby 740 Spectral Processor
Up for sale is a fully functioning Dolby 740 Spectral Processor.
The Dolby 740 is a two-channel, dynamics-based processor for emphasizing low-level sonic details in audio programming.
There is no plug in that replaces this unit. It is a secret weapon of mix engineer Fabian Marasciullo. You can read an article about his use of this unit on T-Pain and Flo Rida
This unit is also used in numerous mastering houses.
Whether bringing out the subtleties in all aspects of recording, mastering, post production, and live performance, or lending character to audio broadcasts, the Dolby provides a high level of flexibility in audio processing. Based on the versatile filtering characteristics of Dolby SR noise reduction, this two-channel dynamic processor allows boosting of low-level signals while leaving high-level signals untouched. Like a magnifying glass for sonic details, the Spectral Processor allows you to tailor your sound like never before. The Dolby 740 processes low-level signals in a side chain, whereas much as 20 dB of boost can be added in low-, mid-, and high-frequency bands. The side chain's signal is then added to the original input signal, resulting in an output with the low-level details boosted, while the high-level signals remain unaffected. For maximum effectiveness, the threshold below which the processing occurs, the amount of boost in each band, and the crossovers between bands are all user-adjustable. A gentle sliding-band noise reduction circuit providing up to 12 dB of action is also included, to reduce any source noise that the low-level equalization process might have emphasized. Other controls include a stereo link switch and adjustable output level. The user adjustments described above make it possible to emphasize ambience, lift harmonics, and bring out otherwise®740 Spectral Processor inaccessible details—all without compressing or limiting transients, increasing overall level, or disturbing the overall sense of dynamics.User adjustments for selectively boosting low-level signals allow broadcasters to tailor the sound for their station, whatever the format. It conveys all the detail of the original source material while eliminating the over-processed sound that can fatigue listeners. When used in conjunction with a conventional compressor/limiter, the Spectral Processor adds greater punch, presence, clarity, and loudness to broadcast signals.“

Ozone has a spectral processor. I usually use it to tame harsh frequencies, but maybe I’ll try it for the Dolby trick.

There must be a youtube video showing what one does....EDIT: nope. I've had one since 1997 or so, all mixes go through it. Useful for restoration work too, it is somewhat equivalent to the additive version of something like RX7 Music Rebalance in that you can take a board tape of a band that's all drums and vocals and turn up the amps. It's a parallel process and you can switch it to process only, do the parallel wherever you like. I almost never use it on individual tracks since it lives on mix bus. Last I looked they were selling $600-800. Dolby does not service them, they had a service/replacement swap-out for NOS units that was around $600 and the last one went out sometime roughly a decade ago.
