I've built 4 of the MK47's. I do hand build the psu's as well, which is part of the sound. I use the best stuff I can get my hands on, and a few tricks I've learned long the way. I have a pair for myself and sold 2 to friends who wanted one after they heard mine. They all sound really great. My vocal recordings all took a major step forward. John K, I think I sent you a track that I recorded with the mic. It's been winning all the vocal shoot outs lately. The vocalist all really love them. The mics inspire the artist in a few ways, which is good. They love the look first, and then they love the sound. I'm very pleased with them.
I built one for Dr. Bill on GS. He loves it I think. Maybe hit him up for some feedback. Also, they make really great drum overheads! Tons of body, reach and detail. They have a lot of the vintage tone and quality.

What would be cool is if I could compare one of these mics to one of your Vintage u47's and see how similar or different they are.

Man, I really didn't think I'd be building another mic, but now I'm really interested in this MK47.. Tell us more about it.. What capsule did you end up using? What was the total build price, etc?

I've used both Red Line and Blue Line capsules from Thiersch. I have also used both the M7 and K7 from BeesNeez. All of them sound really great. I have sound files if you PM me I could let you hear the difference in capsules. Price varies of course depending on parts. I used my Binder cases and connectors which are the a nice addition to this quality of mic. I think I have 100 bucks alone into the mic cable but I have no interest in going cheap with these mics. They sound fantastic. Max did a great job with the design.

You mean the MK47s from Max / ioaudio in Vienna? If they sound anything like the MK7, his first Neumann-eske design with custom transformer, and i guess he does nothing less in quality, than they must be really good. I built one with a Dale Ulan capsule omce and it sounded really good. Now, i see he even sells full kits nowadays, so you can be sure about high quality parts that are chosen with care for the circuit, which is a big plus. Also, he recommends donor microphones for the body, this adds to forseeable good results, because it is a very complete design then. Well, a lot of 'the' sound comes from the capsule, and Thiersch capsules are really high quality standard. But even the Dale Ulan capsule sounded really good in his MK7 circuit. Guess i picked a good one.... Never heard a beezneez capsule, so i cannot compare.... I really was surprised about the outcome of the build, it was astonishingly good. No doubt Max's designs are very well-thought and good sounding.
Best regards, Martin

i built one of max's Mk47, went with a blueline Thiersch M7, nos western electric 408 tubes, sounds really amazing, but i want to know what tricks you did Mr danderloo??? you can't say that, and not spill the beans brother! Also, could you post the samples here of the diffs between the M7 Thiersch blue, and the Bznez k7, (if not, i'll pm you like you said)i have both here, but only one Mk47 sadly...yeah right, i'm stoked to have one!

Hey Dan,
I listened to the drop files, here's my take, favorite order, Blueline, Redline, K7. the blue line was the most balanced to me, the pick striking the strings is buttery and focused, just plain sweet, Redline seemed hotter level wise?, more mid up push for sure, not the same buttery focus on pick sweeping a chord, the k7 was noticeably less pushy in that U47 character as i understand it, It seems kinda scattered and whoomphy compared to the others.
amazing the differences in these capsules, i would have guessed the red and blue to be a little closer, I'm glad i picked the blueline for this mic. Is this close to the way you see those capsules?
did you compare the capacitance on these bad boys?(this is diy after all 8)

The Blueline is my favorite as well, but sometimes the Redline is perfect! It is a hard call sometimes depending on the vocal.
You know, I never did compare the capacitance. I just trust they are within each companies standards.
As far as k87 capsules the BeesNeez is really good. Tim Campbell is the guy for C12.
That's my 2 cents.

thanks for that... that was really nice of you. Great playing too.
I really like the K7 ( have owned that capsule in a Arabella) and I currently own the M7 (beesneez) its in a T1.
I need to do some more listening.. but the K7 is a stand out for me. (mic placement and different takes issues aside)
I was surprised, that in that context, I didnt really like both the Theirsch capsules (gasp) 8)..
context is king i guess.
hmmm, I would love to build one of these MK47s
so much want, so little money and ability 8)
cheers

Ahh, come on, wiz... the MK47 kit is ~230 Euros (what's it in dollars?) and that really is not much, considering it is pretty complete, you have a suitable M7 and probably you get the donor body from one of those GT-2B Alctron type mics. Around here they are 160 Euros new. OKeeee the psu....Well, you got me. it is not THAT cheap. But the results will be great. It *will* get you in that ballpark of the sound you are after if you like all that U47 stuff you probably heard on countless records. It is pretty close. You won't need a huge shootout to recognize this, i just heard a few samples of the MK47 from the net and yes, it sounds alot like the MK7 that i built, even a bit closer to the original. And i was perfectly happy when mine was done, great sound and huge bargain. I just looked into my closet, i am still a proud owner of another MK7 pcb (with transformer) and am just freaking out, since i gave away my mic a few years ago... yeah, stupid me. Already looking into my parts stock....and found an EF12 i might try this time...yummy. But maybe it is too microphonic, did never test it. No k or spez.. But have EF86s too, so everything goes, it sounded good the last time... OK. just need a donor mic body..... It's all about to just get started, right? Somehow... Best regards, Martin

Hi Dan,
Am I understanding that you have files comparing the blue, Red, and K7? I'm very curious, as I recently completed a U47 with the K7. Maybe I'll do a thread about it...
