So I’m laying in my hospital bed and the phlebotomist comes in and recognizes the Clair logo on my T- shirt because her son mixes FOH for a bunch of up and comers.

Hematologist actually does something with the blood ( well these days pushes buttons on a machine) Phlebotomist just draws the blood. I also know at least one Hematologist who would know the Clair logo, I call her mom.

Man, in my experience with Søren, a good phlebotomist vs. a bad phlebotomist could make or break the day. Hope you’re having good ones, ericn.

I was actually a pretty decent phlebotomist back when I was a baby HM (Hospital Corpsman - Navy speak for medic) as a lab tech in early 70's after my first tour as a USMC medic - and agree it makes a huge difference to have a good one when you're on the receiving end of the needle. But even good folks have off days and miss - hopefully those are few and far between for those of you needing blood draws. Haven't done a peripheral stick in years (decades - damn I'm getting old) - now I do central lines (big central veins) but that's usually after no-one can get a peripheral stick or we just need access like right now in trauma.

In case you were wondering, it is best to wait and call your phlebotomist a leech after he or she has taken your blood. Before is not good.

When I was still in SF a large number of the phlebotomists at my local Kaiser were, oddly enough, from Transylvania. All the best ones were, which was important to me, as I have really bad veins.

That’s hilarious and fitting.

I know what you mean about bad veins. Mine collapse at the sight of vampires. no seriously, I have bad veins too that collapse very easily when punctured.

I have had to have the IV team for simple blood draws
