I'm drinking nothing alcoholic this month. It's February! (Smoking lots of pot though.)

Was out in Utah for a week and got turned onto High West Double Rye. Got a bottle for home.
Also got a free double glass of their Midwinter Nights Dram after chatting up a bartender about music stuff - it is freaking unbelievably good.

Finally got a Heaven Hill 7 year. Meh. It’s not bad but not like I remembered. I’ve had several Blue Note Uncut cask proofs that were above decent. So I thought I’d try the Blue Note Las Notas. That was a mistake. There have been very few bourbons that I thought were un-drinkable. This is one of them. Seriously - there is a - I don’t know quite how to say this - “trash” taste. Like they used dirty water or something. It’s as bad as I’ve ever had. I’ve promised to “save” some for jsteiger.

I had a Sauternes wine barrel finished bourbon that sounds kinda like that Las Notas... just awful. Not all wines compliment whiskey. I think distillers are like 'lets just try it, people will buy it anyway'. And they're right!

The night is yet young, but after a suitable amount of work . . . it'll probably be a sip of Knob Rye and then a Turkey and Zevia cola.

I'm going to go off script here and say for the record that gin is underrated these days. Had some Broker's tonight. Very tasty.

I’m not about to start paying inflated prices on the stuff! I've been enjoying a bourbon barrel aged gin from New Riff lately. Not very juniper, more citrus forward. So good. New Riff Gin <link

Back to Maker's Mark tonight. It's my Old Reliable if I'm drinking whiskey. It's been a while!! I'll have to get some again soon . . . in the meantime, just sent the wife to my favorite shop to get a bottle of Buffalo Trace. It's the best mixing whiskey for everyday hydration.

Back and neck are killing me so day-drinking some Bulliet Red wine and tequila seem to be the booze that help my pain. A medical professional said the wine thing makes sense, some chemicals in it that act as an analgesic/muscle relaxer.

Kinahans Irish Whiskey… in the spirit of the holiday. Non chill filtered and 46% ABV. Excellent bang for the buck Irish Whiskey! Big step up from the standard Jameson fare.
