I am old school, despite the fact that I liked the song and felt it was well-written, performed, and produced; I would have enjoyed it more without the swearing. If someone is in the existential funk that the 1st person character in the song is, it is for sure that he is not going to be worried about using rough language. The song is very raw sounding, so it fits. But it pulls me out of the song and makes me starts me wondering what my grandparents would have thought, what my parents would think, and what it will be like for my kids.

Meh...I don't know...I don't know if everyone is of the Bible Belt persuasion that we are. The song talks about smoking pot with a cancer patient...I would think my grandma would probably have a problem with that too.

Just wanted to give this thread a bump to kind of pay forward all the enjoyment I've gotten from this album.
I knew little of the Drive By Truckers or any history in that area, but man, if Isbell's "Cover Me Up" doesn't still give me goosebumps every time I hear it, which must be in the triple digits by now. Not even sure why, except that I believe it.
Thank you for giving this guy some love.

Check out Chris Knight too...And Sturgill Simpson. Pretty sure Chris Knight was the act that was booked to play the Horseshoe here and got bumped by some unknowns called the Rolling Stones for one of their club warm up dates. A buddy of mine worked for Chris's record company so he got to see the show. If I have the right guy, he's been around a while. I like what I've heard of Sturgill too. And the Isbell album is really good. He came through town last week but I couldn't make that one. Cheers, Geoff

Thanks for the heads up on these two -
the Sturgill Simpson album is pretty incredible - it felt like time travel. I had to double check the release date a couple of times. Is the album indicative of the artist's taste and vision, or was this more of a case of flexing some production muscle? Stunning either way.

Speaking of Chris Knight, there's some good lines in this song.
It is a more tempered version of the "Honey why do love a jerk like me" song that is so pervasive in modern country music.

The song talks about smoking pot with a cancer patient...I would think my grandma would probably have a problem with that too. As a young man i actually have been in this situation, a day before the sister of one of my best friends died at the age of 19. I really like the mood he creates in the song. Well, i'm not a country type of guy, but i think the song is very well made...

Not a response to what you said, Small...but would anyone consider this Country anymore? I would actually consider it closer to Ray LaMantagne than Luke Bryan. I guess this firmly sits in the Alt Country category. My, how far Country music has strayed.

I think that Isbell song falls into the same category as this. Great song also!

The guy has a great voice, without killing us with over singing like every other bearded hipster and singer seems compelled to do today.
