So there's a petition that's started up to change the name of the purple site due to negative connotations and usage of the word "slut" as a slur. I'm never offended by words. After all, they are just words.. So I wouldn't necessarily sign just because of the name. However, there's also a juicy tidbit that popped up about one of the founders being screwed over by a certain J man. This is the kind of thing that gets my blood up. Maybe we should sign in solidarity?

FWIW, the story seems to differ from the official story/timeline posted circa 2004 (three years prior to the falling out stated above). J's statement that the impetus for creating the site didn't exist until late 2001/early 2002 would seem to be supported by the domain registration data (registered in May of 2002). Not sure who I'd lend more credence to in this case.

The name certainly doesn't help gender equality in the industry. It certainly keeps it more of a boys club. It's self-reinforcing.

So apparently they're going to change the name. J said it was the right thing to do in an interview where he talked for 5 minutes about how people were embarrassed to say the name, like church musicians, teachers, advertisers, etc. Barely even mentioned the sexual connotations.
Can almost guarantee it was about advertisers getting cold feet over the petition..

I'm cool with it.
I always felt kind of embarrassed talking about GS to anyone who isn't in pro audio. Even then, I remember mentioning GS years ago when working with a bigger producer and he literally just rolled his eyes and was like, "Those guys."
It's a goofy friggin' name. Not a big deal if it changes. Not a hill I'd want to die on.

The reason for their success was simply being by far the fastest web site of the ones that the rec.audio.pro mailing list had split into. This meant we could read and post during off times while working. After Meg disappeared, the site slowed down considerably, but had already become the dominant audio site.

"Slut" has a lot of baggage. If you're a woman and you're in an already male-dominated field, I'm sure the name is a turn off. But also it's just a really dumb name. I've felt like a friggin' dork every time I've said it out loud.

I remember a point in time several years back when they had the alternate URL "gearz.com", presumably for those who didn't want the GS name showing up on their screen or in their history. That obviously never took hold.

If they rename it to purple site does that mean we get sued if we use purple? Just kidding ;-p .. (I hope!)

Actually I don't believe it has that much effect - not nearly as much as the constant bickering and vicious personal attacks that some long term members indulge in.
I saw something Jules posted somewhere about the name change. While I'm not opposed to the name change I think that the proposed change to "Gearz" or "Gearsz" is pretty boring and unappealing. Might draw a bunch of car nuts though.
Certainly not as memorable and catchy as "Gearslutz".

As I said, I'm not opposed to a name change - but I am somewhat offended by the intrusion of "political correctness" into our field. It ain't rock and roll.

"Audio Alcatraz"? "Folsom Fidelity"? "San Quantiz"? Something catchy, with some Street Crud, to attract the Youngin's. Chris

Well then I guess it's a good thing no one said anything about getting "really bent out of shape" about it. Ask yourself what the average response is if a dude goes out and gets laid vs the response if a woman does. The dude is a conqueror, the woman is the conquered. He's supposed to be proud, she's supposed to be ashamed. At least that's how it's been historically. Does the name of some gear website really matter? No. If the site decides to change their culturally-loaded name should John Eppstein be "offended" by it? Also no. I think we can all handle being big boys and ridding ourselves of a little d-baggery here and there without always having to pitch little entitled fits about it. PS I don't mean you specifically are "pitching a fit" in this case, just that dudes in general (I include myself) don't tend to take kindly to justified criticism. In my view it's very snowflake-y to not be able to handle the leveling of a playing field, whether a given issue matters very much or not.

Even when I was among the first 50 (or so) members at GS... I thought it would be better, to have a better long term name for that website.
Despite being the "goofy guy" I am, I figured the shelf life of "Gearslutz" would be limited.
A more welcoming name, will definitely have more broad appeal. Chris

A more welcoming name, will definitely have more broad appeal. And more appeal to broads. Hey-o. Try the veal. The big problem with that is that there are very, very few women involved in pro audio. That ain't gonna change if GS sanitizes their name.

I don't really care if Jules decides to change the name of his site. What I DO care about is how "political correctness" is taking over and, for lack of a better word, "homogenizing" everything. It's like takling all the peppers out of Mexican food.
