I have a beater (old Alvarez R10 I think) that I have been using and it just doesn’t really sound or play all that great high strung. I was wondering what some of you are using. I was thinking a cheaper but still decent like some of the smaller bodied Yamahas or a baby Tayor.

I've always wanted to try this and never have. I've got a couple of guitars that I mostly just keep for sentimental reasons. I should high-string one of them and give it a go.

I’ve got a Danelectro 12 string that I got for like $80. Not huge into the electric 12 sound, but if you pull off the 3 Normal EAD strings it turns it into a different flavor.
I know it’s not an acoustic but it’s a great layer.
I’ve tried it with the baby Taylor. Save your money those things don’t stay in tune and are pretty worthless unless it’s for a kiddo or you’re hiking the AT

I have a D18 specifically made for high-strung. It's nice to have decent intonation on a high strung guitar.

I bought a used Mitchell MO-100S/PK (GC house brand) for high strung applications, and it's one of the best guitars I have. Plays better than my martins and sounds like a dream. Wish I had another and I'd leave one in open tuning and one standard.

I would never have guessed that a GC-branded guitar at that price would sound good at all. I'm assuming that your Mitchell is a Gibson style acoustic? Do they make Martin knockoffs too?

I don't know what or if its a knockoff. But it's a small body parlor style guitar. 000-18 size. Wonderful sounding. It's quite possible I just got lucky or maybe it just likes being high strung. I bought it for $105 from a local retired guy who buys trashed guitars and refurbs them. Fancies himself a luthier. But it was set up great, he put in a bone nut, etc.. Best $105 I ever spent on a guitar.

I'll definitely have to check this out. 12 fret or 14 fret? Edit: I see that it's a 14 fret. I'll have to see if they have a 12 fret version.

Wish I had another and I'd leave one in open tuning and one standard. They're affordable. Buy two more. You 'NEED' them. You know you do. You would offer me the same kind advice, you know you would!

I also have a beat to hell Seagull S6 that I had a friend cut a new bridge specifically for high strings. It's due for a set up but defineitely useable. The cedar body works well for this application.

Why do most people go for a cheap guitar for high strung guitars - is it that bad for the guitar all that extra tension?
I'd like to try it - should I buy a cheap second hand guitar first?

Well the strings are thin so I don’t think so but you are not really going for big tone more the higher end shallow sheen to compliment other guitar parts or to sit one place in the mix, so don’t need all the range of a more expensive guitar ?

I think that mopst people use a less expensive guitar for Nashville/High Strung guitars because those are generally what's left around the studio when you need to string a guitar that way for the odd song.
