I sold a pair of essentially brand new JBL 705’s and the buyer is claiming that one of the tweeters is broken and he filed a claim. He’s absolutely lying. The speakers were in perfect condition when I sent them.
eBay just told me I have to issue a return label, and once I get the items back I can open a claim...but we all know how that’s going to go, don’t we? They’re going to side with the buyer because it’s essentially my word against his.
I’m so fucked.
Any advice?

Only to not be surprised if the tweeter did indeed take a hit in shipping. I bought 3 pairs of LSR28P's NEW before one pair arrived with both good tweeters. Sorry!

Was there obvious damage to the boxes when you go them? Or do you think they just got shipped with DOA tweeters? I’d it was shipping related I could file an insurance claim.

No obvious box damage, factory boxes. Those particular ones were fragile enough to die on any sort of box drop. Hell, I think they were double boxed from the factory, still looked like obvious physical driver distortion, you could see it immediately. I would certainly try to get the buyer to document the box condition for you, as many pics as possible. Just in case.

You have to take it one step at a time. Jump throuh one hoop at a time. Take pictures of everything, have your documentation organised and be prepared to suffer a small loss. Sure you will be out of postage but of the speaker is fine you can sell them again or if they are damaged hit up the freight company for a small damage claim. It is sort of the risk you take in selling online. Not ideal and works selling online most of the time but sometimes things just wont go your way.

Look for tool marks and evidence they might have swapped tweeters.
It used to be a huge problem on eBay that folks would buy something and swap their broken parts from their stuff and then claim the seller sent them broken stuff and get a refund.
Not saying this is the case here, but you should check anyway.

Not saying this is the case here, but you should check anyway. Brilliant advice!! I sold a camera on ebay maybe 15 years ago and the buyer tried to return it for not working. They did not even contact me directly, just requested a refund. Back then, ebay was even more rabid about protecting buyers and screwing sellers in the process. I messaged the person and made mention that I had secretly marked the screws on the camera to see if anyone had tampered with it. The refund thing was withdrawn and I never heard back from them. I've since had another couple of credit card chargeback scams attempted on sales so I learned to sell everything clearly stated "AS IS" and "FOR PARTS" with "NO WARRANTY AND NO RETURNS" in the description even if it's perfectly working and nobody has tried to screw me since.

So...I sent that buyer a message yesterday asking if he could go into further detail regarding the “blown tweeter” and if he could detail exactly what he was experiencing. I also asked if he had done any basic troubleshooting like switching cables etc. I followed it up with another message asking him to thoroughly document the damage with pictures and send them to me...
Today I get a eBay alert that the return has been closed by the buyer...I don’t know what to think...I’m excited, relieved, but also scared something else is going to come up...like it was a mistake or something lol
I was so incredibly pissed yesterday when I got that return request. I was literally shaking in anger...but after a while I just reserved myself to the idea that life was trying to teach me something and to be grateful for the lesson...and then this happens...crazy...
Anyway, I’m still in a little disbelief and feel like something else is going to happen...but I’m feeling a large amount of gratitude at the same time.
Thanks everyone for your comments.

I think you called his bluff and that svart is likely spot on. I always take detailed shots before I ship and of the box to be able to confirm damage in transit on after on receipt.
Lots of scum bags out there!

Ebay is screwing everyone, not just you. Just like Paypal, FB, Amazon...
There's a scam going around, targeting game lovers. An ad showing pics of a nice metal looking mask/helmet, offering it at steep discount. Like 30$ for a 100 $ item. Box with styrofoam protection etc in the pics.
When it arrives, it's a rubber mask in an envelope. If the buyer tries to return it, he's offered a 5$ discount. If he persists, it goes to 10$ suggesting it could be a nice gift. AFAIK nobody's gotten their money back, except one blogger. The ads get pulled, but they return with a different company name.
Don't tell me Amazon ebay and the likes aren't able to see the same pics used every time again.

Well I was one of those bastards who filed an eBay return claim without first contacting the seller. I ordered a fishing reel. Six weeks later it arrives. Two sizes smaller than I ordered and a right hand retrieve. I ordered a left hand retrieve. The seller responds and offers me a ‘30% discount’ if I agree to keep the reel. The discount equates to the normal price of the reel they actually sent me. They then offer a 40% discount and tell me that I can sell the reel or give it to someone as a gift. Why the hell would I want to do that??! I explain that if I sold baseball mitts and they ordered a left hand large mitt but I sent them a right hand small mitt would a discount or giving it away to someone solve their problem? They refunded my money.

Lots of scum bags out there! Always lots of pictures, document everything, but do remember UPS, FedEx,etc could damage just about anything no matter how well it’s packed.

I guess that explains why, when I got my U48, it came in a box big enougth for a battleship full of goddamn styrofoam peanuts. Not even bubblewrap - well there was a little wrap, but not much. Enough styrofoam to float a cruise ship.
Mic arrived in good shape, but still....

In case it helps anyone, I'll mention a few things I've learned over the years. Most of this relates to recent policies because things have changed a lot. First is that you can return just about anything through ebay or paypal (if it was purchased as "goods") just by saying it doesn't work correctly. When I sell an expensive item on ebay I take pics of the insides, because part replacement scams are still a thing. You might want to make a quick phone vid showing the item in operation. If I'm really unsure about the buyer and it's a high dollar item, I may even record myself packing/sealing the item so there's no debate about what was shipped. I've had a couple scammers bail on their claims when I upload evidence of the item I shipped.
