I've got some cast recordings coming up on Saturday at the theatre and decided to see how many headphones I could cobble together to avoid monitor bleed. In the studio, I have 3 pairs of closed MoreMes, 3 pairs of open Monoprice AKG knock offs, and pairs of 7506s and 240Ms. Then there's the pile of casualties... mostly with one dead driver. I'll be recording on Pro Tools Carbon which has 4 headphone amps built-in plus stereo monitor outs, as well as bringing a separate rack with a Presonus HP60, which has 6 headphone amps. I'm bringing an old pair of EV Sentry 100ELs for playback using the monitor outs, I'll use Carbon's HP1 out with the 7506s during tracking and put the conductor on HP2 with the 240Ms. HP3 out will feed the HP60's stereo input. So I have 6 pairs of working phones left to run off the Presonus but the smallest ensemble were tracking is seven. I tried using some cheap patchbay modules to mult the phone outputs, which worked, so I dug through the casualty pile and pulled six more pairs out with one ear working. Half the singers tend to run one ear off, so I'll patch the 6 stereo pairs to the first three HP60 channels and the six mono phones to the last three channels using the patchbay modules as mults. Tricky bit is each mult point needs to be spaced about 6' apart and the raw patchbay modules are just bare PCB cards. Decided I needed six cheap and cheerful enclosures, so I grabbed an Altoids tin I was storing spare console knobs in to see if the card would fit, and voila: Drilled it out and taped the top and bottom: One mult box down, five to go:

So the little card is a multing/splitting patchbay channel? Neat.

So the little card is a multing/splitting patchbay channel? Neat. Yup, the jack with the nut on it is half normalled to the jack next to it (under it when vertical) so plugging a TRS plug into the jack on the opposite side of the card doesn't interrupt flow, it just mults the signal. You can hear the volume drop a bit when adding the second phones load.
