Kinda surprised they were like $90 at stewmac. Any cheap alternatives?

The cheap ones on Amazon really suck.
Do you want/need to form raw material from scratch or just smooth out burrs & maybe widen a slot here & there?
If the latter, an occasional use kinda thing there are a handful of good enough options for short cash. Maybe even using modified tools you already have.

I’m trying to lower the nut height on my stray because it’s a little sharp on the third fret of the low E and A strings. I bought one of the Music Nomad individual string files off of Sweetwater.

So you're just looking to cut the nuts slots deeper? Go to a Home DEpot or a hardware store and get some fine saw blades in various thicknesses (some experimentation will be required). Find blades that match thos slots (40 thou for the A and 50 thou for the E should do it). Check for a bulk pack of jigsaw blades, the Milwaukee Tools' ones work for me.

I bought a set of cheap files a few years ago after a particularly bad experience with a tech I had used for a long time. Pretty much do everything but nut & fretwork, figured how hard could it be? The cheap files sucked. Lost their edge and turned into dull butter knives real quickly. Got just a couple of uses out of 'em on bone & Corian, which Corian is a hard material to work with and they clearly weren't up to the task. If you need to deepen a slot or smooth it from burrs I'll often use 400-600 grit paper wrapped around a feeler gauge. Not as useful here but good to have for general maintenance esp things like fret sprout or shaving an acoustic saddle is a good set of needle files. Avoid the cheap hazard freight stuff, decent set is like $15-20. Next time I have serious work to do I'll pop for a set of Stew Mac nut files. I find a lot of their tools to be overpriced, but, nut files are one thing that isn't worth the compromise. Especially compared to pro setup fees. Until then I'll stick to the feeler gauges & sandpaper...
