Jonesing for a new amp...,been down the rabbit hole of Princeton clones and there’s sooooo many. Some seem really cool, but $$$. I’m kinda looking for a little more power/headroom without losing the Princeton character totally. Anyone have any input here? It would be a recording/gigging amp hence the need for a little more power.

Pull Boost Princeton Reverb, add a deluxe output transformer and a Kendrick Black Frame Speaker. Same great sound, but can be louder... it's what I did.

Princetons are probably my favorite amp and I've owned a few. The circuit is simple so quality really comes down to component choice. Don't spend a ton. You can even consider them a good beginner DIY project. I highly recommend a 12" speaker. Just gives them more of a "big boy" voice and they sound like they belong this way, IMO. I don't like gain mods as they just take away from the vibe here. The Princeton definitely isn't a "hot" sound. The charm is the natural rawness and a character that is slightly cold, but still smooth. Definitely not pushed sounding. The Reverb version has a little more volume if that's what you need. Otherwise, consider a Deluxe if volume is a real issue.

Exactly - and no one is going to howl if you mod a Pull Boost Princeton Reverb. Mine's a 1980 and sounds great. Agree a 12" can be a nice addition, but if I want more of that girth I'll plug into my 1x12 Dr Z cabinet. May have to make a male/female speaker cable to use the '74 Princeton speaker that sits below it at home...

It was killer, but the tubes rattled like crazy! I’m kinda jonesing for one of those magic amps 2x10 vibro prince amps. But again, very pricey.

I have a Princeton Reverb limited edition 65 reissue that has a 12” celestion in it. Great amp.
That said I am getting ready to acquire a 68 Vibro Champ to be it’s baby brother.

I never got on with the newer fender reissues. That vibro champ sounds great, but I have an early 80’s champ that just kills. Talked to Mike Marsh today...he’s gonna build me a 2x10 Princeton with an added mid control. I’m going with 2 Jensen p10r-f’s which are used in amps like the vibro king. I think it’s gonna be a killer recording/gigging amp.

Two Princeton Reverbs here: a '72 and a newer reissue. The '72 has a new Celestion Gold in it. I'm very pleased. The reissue is serviceable, but doesn't have the character of the vintage model.
I prefer the Reverb model because of the extra gain stage. Breaks over quicker.
A clone that gets a lot of praise is the Headstrong Lil King. Made here in NC.

I have an old Princeton non reverb which is a great clean machine. Not as much gain as the Princeton reverb. Since I’m never gonna sell it and I use it all the time as a tool, I did two simple mods to it. There’s a 6.8k resistor off the back of the bass pot. That’s your mid range adjustment preset. Take that resistor and swap in a 25k pot and now you have adjustable mid range. Also if you put the connection that goes to ground on a switch when the switch is open, It is bypassing the tone section and suddenly you have a champ like amp but louder… It’s obviously not exactly like a champ but it has some of those angry qualities. And with another switch make the negative feedback defeatable. These two things really cover a lot of ground are easily reversible and no animals were hurt in the procedure.

Got my 2x10 from Marsh a few weeks ago. It’s killer. Speakers were kinda meh for me so I popped in 2 lil buddies. It’s LOUD now. Not as Princeton like as the Jensens, but I can definitely gig this thing, and not worry about running out of juice. Loves pedals too. If anyone here is looking for a great clone amp, Marsh does killer work, and he’s cheaper than all the other usual suspects!

If you love any guitar/amp, I say great.
My one thing though is it can be really hard to find the right buyer for used boutique stuff if it doesn't have great name recognition.
