Yeah I know John how dare I, but since some of us prefer other indulgences well this our equal opportunity thread damn it! For instance tonight was my weekly trip across the street and while it was my favorite bartenders birthday he ran out of Triplesec so the Cosmos needed something. So we had no choice but to either walk a block down the street or consume Cosmos made with Grand Mariner, not as smooth but I found them comfortable by the 4th one.

It was a night of 360 Vodka. Not bad but I’m still a Kettle One boy. Found out my bartender has a book ( of course ) that’s really been published.

When it’s hot out like it is right now, I do enjoy a nice gin martini. Uncle Val’s is specifically the one that really hits the spot.

I haven’t found anything I’ve liked more than Hendricks Give it a shot it’s quite good! Bear in mind I don’t pretend that my martini is anything other than 3 shots of gin shaken with ice and poured into a chilled glass with 3 olives.

Ive been diving very deep into the rum world. And amaro. PS - referring to your 2021 Cosmo... one could argue that Grand Marnier is a far superior orange liqueur than some random triple sec. Or maybe he uses Cointreau triple sec which is quite yummy.

For the rum lover's.... anyone enjoy Appleton 12 and the Appleton 15? Most bourbon folks love Barbados rum for the similar barrel flavor but it has that benefit of tropical aging ( i.e. foursquare) but personally I'll take that Jamaican funk all day and all night. Soon the bourbon heads will catch on.
Current favorite mai tai blend-
1/2 oz Appleton Estate 12 1/2 oz Smith and Cross 1/2 oz Plantation OFTD 1/2 oz Plantation xaymaca 1/2 oz Liber and Co orgeat 1/2 oz Ferrand Dry Curaçao 1 oz lime juice
Shake and dirty pour with pellet ice into double old fashioned and Garnish with mint and spent lime shell

Try El Tesoro Blanco next time. We've been on a margarita kick and shaking with large cubed ice then pouring gate pouring into a glass with a 2.5" ice cube has made a world of difference. Bonus points- perfect for an old fashion as well. Cue the weller, buffalo trace, 1920 old forester- and gulp- even blantons. We don't discriminate lol

Shaking with crushed ice is a big no no for 'pro' bartenders... over dilutes. But- if it works it works! To each their own.

Many a pro's in the Tiki world not only shake with pellet ice but flash blending to proper dilution as well. But you're correct in that dilution is always a important factor to ratios and cocktail balance.

Interesting, I’m pretty deep in the tiki world and have always been advised to not use crushed or pellet ice to shake. Regular ice in the shaker then poured over pellet after.

For the rum lover's.... anyone enjoy Appleton 12 and the Appleton 15?] Appleton doesn’t really do it for me personally. As far as Jamaican rum, I prefer Smith and Cross, Wray and Nephew, Hampden stuff, Doctor Bird, Worthy Park.

Man Those are all great rums for sure! Love me those pot still funk bombs. I recently snagged a Papalin 7 which is a mix is approximately 80% Worthy Park 7 year aged pot still and 20% Hampden 7 year aged pot still, but I haven't cracked it open yet, might need to change that here shortly....
if you wanna get a good read on some tiki history and drinks check out BeachBum Berry's Sippin' Safari or Smugglers Cove. Both are fantastic reads, have great recipes, and breakdown so much technique with ice shells, garnishes, home made syrups etc.

I don't drink often, but when I do it's usually a small, neat glass of Fernet-Branca after dinner. If you like mixed drinks, it's pretty great mixed with Coke. It's also free street cred if you're hanging out with restaurant industry folks.

For the rum lover's.... SNIP I can't quite find a better rum than Diplomatico from Venezuela... but it's hard to find.

For the rum lover's.... SNIP I can't quite find a better rum than Diplomatico from Venezuela... but it's hard to find. Ehhh its not bad but very sweet for me. I loved it at first but now it feels a bit medicinal. The Mantuano from them is a bit better and nice as a splash on top of a Painkiller or Pina Colada. Try El Dorado 12 if you like Diplomatico. An excellent step into the non-dosed rum world. Or... Ron Zacapa 23 is a sweetened rum that has a bit more complexity than Diplomatico.
