I messed around the other day with the UAD emu of the DBX 160vu and I remembered why I love that compressor so much. I can't find anything else to do to the snare what it does and I want to build one, this build looks like they have taken a lot of time in remaining faithful to the original circuit, and the options for which VCA you want is really attractive. Has anyone built this yet?? I've got that warm fuzzy, and that means I'll be building this baby. Just need some fellow feedback before I start getting into it. Here's the GDIY page: groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=43548.0Here's where you get the board: store.acsoundstudio.com/pcb/ac-sound-clxvu-compressor-pcb.htmlThanks! Jerome

jeromemason lol, i didn't even know this was there? but now i'll put it on my list 8) looks like a great project, i have 2 dbx 166's fully modded by Jim williams, they are essentially 160's with the 2180a vca's in them, quite kickass to say the least, especially in the stereo pairs. I definitely say go for it bro, let us know when you start T

I've seen that before. It's not as easy of a build as other projects and isn't as well supported. I've thought about building one myself but I don't see needing another one. My 160 lives on the bass guitar insert and that's about it.
Strangely enough, part of the mojo of the DBX160 is the fact that it wasn't designed with very good decoupling and such. Upgrading it murders the beloved slow and sludgy DBX160 sound and replaces it with a new and modern sound, that honestly is just like every other VCA compressor.
I can tell you this because I made the same mistake. I returned to the unit and took all my "upgrades" out and replaced everything that I took out.

It's one of those strange times when old design and the subsequent slow transient response of low bandwidth opamps and poor decoupling actually sounds good!

I have the CLX. It rules. Seriously, I've gotten it to a number of friends as well, they love it. These just work great on a number of things.

I just saw in the build thread where you posted and was going to ask what you thought about it. How was the build? I know it has a lot of calibrating, but it really looks straight forward to me. Also, do you remember off hand what the final cost was for building it? I know the case is for two units, just wanted to get a rough idea of how much this will cost. Thanks!

I can't remember cost but I do remember it was cheaper then most and easier build then most. The calibration process is super easy from what I remember.
