Question is in the title. Who or what's a good host these days? Need to create a new site for the audio production...
One of the things that happened last summer was I ditched the web host, domain name & email that I had used forever. Like it pre-existed Utoob if you can believe that.
I wasn't totally unhappy, or happy with the old hosting company but over time things change, especially on the interknot and it was a perfect time to nuke and start fresh. Ok... what really happened was they moved email from a web server to microsoft office (also web based) which, was about as terrible as it sounds. And they did it with barely 48 hours notice and right as my renewal hit.
For primary email I staked out a gmail claim some months back. Simple and in theory I can access it anywhere. For a web host I don't need much. No complicated esales or anything like that. Text, handful of pictures, contact form? Links to the insta of grams? Maybe a couple 3 pages total. Wanna keep it simple.
So besides square & wix what's good? What's bad? What others should I take a peak at? I haven't really looked into this stuff since like... 2004? And so modern web host/design is kind of a foreign landscape at this point.

I use wix but used to use squarespace. They’re both very similar but I find wix to be superior. It has a better, more intuitive UI, and much better integration with third party apps (like calendars, scheduling apps, payment processing, etc)
You can create a page for free and just pay when you’re ready to publish it. They give decent price brakes for paying yearly, and they give you like $300 in google ad credits, plus one year of free domain registration, so the first year or two it’s a pretty good deal.

Maybe 15 years ago I did my own website. I learned HTML and it took forever to do and it looked pretty old and tired after a few years but the biggest issue was the old HTML and Javascript had a security flaw that someone used to hack it and destroyed it. Then my webhost threatened to DROP me because of my infected website despite their insistence that they had 24/7 protection.. Anyway, I asked around about a new website some time ago. I had a "pro" do a partial idea for me as well but was underwhelmed. I even asked here about one and a number of folks heavily suggested that I do one myself. After the pain of doing one myself so long ago I really wasn't looking forward into doing it. I had dabbled in the "online builder" type of websites maybe a decade ago and was underwhelmed at what they could do. So I looked around more and I just couldn't get anyone interested in doing a site for me. I would have paid going rates but what I found was that the good designers were already full-time employed and the freelancers were either flakes, couldn't give me an honest pricing or wanted to steer my vision into something else entirely. I took a look at the modern "build it yourself" websites and I thought Squarespace offered the best options for website templates for the cost. www.theopiumdenproductions.com/ |

Rooms look good too! Used to do my own way back when too. Never learned html but had a program a buddy hooked me up with. Looking at your site though... seems to be one glaring omission. Contact? How do people get in touch? Where are you? Your in Ohio or Kentucky or something yes? Don't have to list the street address... I've never done that myself but saying we're in this town or at least like, hey the studio is in the greater Paducah region goes a long way. |

Part of the security of the studio is being somewhat inconspicuous so I've always refrained from putting too much info on the web. Most folks contact me through the facebook link anyway, so I never really thought to put the city on the webpage. Good catch! |
