I dunno if you're interested in putting together your own but there are a number of decent priced raw cabinets on ebay and you could just put your own speakers in it..

Reminds a bit of the THD ones, which were nice and may pop up used from time to time. I think they were around the $800 mark new, but that was a while ago. FWIW, I had a chat with a booteak amp builder and he liked the Mojotone stuff but wasn\t too keen on Avatar. I have an Avatar 2 x 12 that I bought two backs for - one open one closed. I think they now come (or can come) with a three piece back so if you have a screwdriver and a couple minutes you can convert it from open to closed back (or vice versa). That makes a lot of sense to me. I'm sure others do that as well. Have you thought about speakers? Even with a Celestion gold or blue, a 1 12 cab should be well within your budget. If you're getting it for the 3rd power, what do those guys think? Cheers, Geoff

Check the construction and design. Sealed cab's are best for me and my guitars. I don't like 5/8's plywood construction like Marshall, too boxy and they tend to rattle.
I have 3/4" plywood cabs and MDF cabs. The MDF is the most solid sounding, but also the heaviest.
Most of the speakers are Eminence, Red Coats, Legends, etc. I love their stuff next to those Chi-com 'brit' speakers. They take the power, don't suffer from power compression and they sound better to me. They are also more efficient, offering more volume per watt.

A guitarist-friend of mine recently brought a Mesa Thiele 1x12. It worked magic with my Marshall. We also tried my Marshall 4x12 with Greenbacks and my 2x12 with the Greenback/V30 combo. The Mesa sounded best for what we did that day. I'm thinking of getting one myself. This one had the cheap Celestion in it, you can also get them with an EV12.
