This is a Hairball Gold, a version of the Jensen/Hardy 990 preamp. People suggest using 2520's for an alt color, and treble goes to shit at high gain. Orange and blue are the minimum gain lines, look the same, green is high gain 990, red is high gain 2520 down -3.25 at 10kHz. Flipside, you might get away with a 990 in an API type preamp, but the 990 is optimized for a 600 ohm input, where the API is up around 10K, so noise won't be 'ideal'.

People who suggest the 2520 might be hard of hearing or old (I'm not using those words as pejoratives). The high-end loss is significant.

Weird. Never noticed any high end changes with 2520s.

Weird. Never noticed any high end changes with 2520s. 2520’s in a circuit meant for 990’s. They measure fine in API style preamps.

I just see someone going “but, but it fits”😜
