After 3 days of soldering XLR, TRS and tinning wires for Phoenix Connectors (I found 6 position with strain relief) a friend asked me to build some cables for his HT, all RCA god those things suck!

1930's consumer table radio connector, amazing it's still in use. No wait......the XLR was also not the best connector option, just the cheaper one.......

XLR was relatively cheap and locking ! at least Cannon & Switchcraft gave us some strain relief, I was lookikin at some exotic Consumer XLRs and no strain relief. $75 plugs for your $10k cable and no strain relief?

Thankfully I have not soldered an RCA for well over 10 years. Hope to never do one again. At this stage, I've even weaned the studio off of TRS. There's only a few pieces that need an XLR to Try pigtail at this stage. Glad most manufacturers have moved to XLR's.

Hey playing with Soundweb I keep wondering why we can’t adopt the modern version of the barrier strip the Phoenix connector no soldering, just a small screwdriver!

For me, the RCA plugs from Amphenol are easier to work with than any of the Neutrik models.

Here’s an illustration of the installation from the Amphenol website. www.amphenolaudio.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/Amphenol_RCA_Assembly_diagram_Jan2019.pdfI see the green Phoenix Contact terminals and DIN Rail Terminal blocks all the time at the day job, in PLC and communications applications. It would be interesting to see wider use in the pro audio world.

They are all over the install market, it’s so much easier to talk someone through using a screwdriver over the phone and if they balk explaining the minimum for a service call usually convinces them.

Man what are y'all going on about? RCA plugs are dead simple to use and solder. Avoid the cheap (flimsy) and the expensive (overpriced and too rigid/hard to plug) ones and you're fine.

I would think using a green scotch-brite pad on them, then tin the wire just a little, then soldering them on.

I still say DB25s are the worst to solder up! I’ve probably done close to 1k of them over the past couple decades! 💩
Just finishing up 48 Neutrik right-angle 1/4” TRS right now! I don’t like them, but I still think straight ‘ol 297 Switchcraft suck much worse!
