I would say, "Want to do another one?"...but I'm sure I couldn't afford it.
That's a work of art, my friend!

This was a bit over $7000 in parts just because I went nuts with the TOP of the Line EVERYTHING !!! I will post a detailed BOM price soon. Cheers

Holy shit, awesome build! How long did it take from starting collecting parts to get it completely finished? I mean, could you estimate the working hours and the time period it took? You took an amazing focus on the details, i guess it would take me like hundred(s) of hours. Or were pre-manufactured parts (case-parts, mounting stuff, frontpanel and kit parts) helpful to reduce this to a sane kind of overseeable project?

And another question, how did you select and match the tubes, did you buy pre-matched or did you do this yourself as well?

You took an amazing focus on the details, i guess it would take me like hundred(s) of hours. Or were pre-manufactured parts (case-parts, mounting stuff, frontpanel and kit parts) helpful to reduce this to a sane kind of overseeable project? To be honest I have no idea how many hours I put in. I bought the PCB from ebay in November 2013 and I've populated it pretty fast. I had to wait a very long time for Tat at DIY-RACKED - Enhance Your Sound to gather people to order new cases for the 670. However, the most labour intense was to modify the back of the case to fit the big signal caps and the trannies. Also i had to reinforce the case because the compressor is very, very heavy! Keep in mind that you can still build this baby way cheaper! Only the Goldpoint Attenuators and the resistors on it cost me a whooping $1000. Big Mundorf Caps were $180. Anyways, in the end you'll be able to save lots of money if you build it yourself vs buying a replica from other companies. Oh, BTW, I bought the resistors BOM x 10. I wanted to make sure that I'll find the exact match to perfectly balance the voltages between the channels. Also I live in Canada so I had to pay some taxes and shipping which I've included in the Total Price of the Unit. Just to let you know, I had some experience with the soldering iron before but I'm not an electronic engineer whatsoever. I had to take an electronics on-line course to refresh my knowledge and to try to understand the schematic as much as I could. I had to read the manual many many times to make sure that I understand what is going on and to make sure that I won't blow up anything. This is my first electronic project ever and I am surprised that it worked at first power on! If you follow the manual step by step IT WILL WORK. There is a lot of information on Drip's website and in the forums. I gotta tell you that it's a helluva comp!

Where did you get the meters? I like those SO much better than the cheaper looking meters at DIY racked

And another question, how did you select and match the tubes, did you buy pre-matched or did you do this yourself as well? You buy the Tubes from tubedepot.com Those alone will set you up at about $1200. The Most expensive ones were the 8 X 6386 ($1000). They are pretty much matched but you still have to move them around to find the sweet spot on L/R channels.(DB wise) The good thing about this design is that you have 4 X 6386 per channel in parallel and with the cathode balance adjust you'll be able to fine tune the triodes within 0.2 db. That's the closest I've got on this baby. This was my first project as I've mentioned before and now I'm saving to guid the Drip UE-100 eq. I think will be more expensive than the Fairchild 670 but it will take me a lot of time to build it. It's got 274 relays ($4 per unit), 40 grayhill switches ($17/unit) and no less than 30 Tubes of awesomeness! Not to mention the trannies and the rest of the BOM. I will post pics once I'll be done with it (6 months from now on maybe... need to find the money to finance it) Cheers

Or were pre-manufactured parts (case-parts, mounting stuff, frontpanel and kit parts) helpful to reduce this to a sane kind of overseeable project? All I had was the PCB from e-bay ($500). Drip has the BOM for mouser.com and also the manuals for how to build it. My attention to detail comes from the fact that I've been working as a broadcast wireman for the last 10 years. I had to build TV stations from scratch and wiring is my bread and butter. When you work with bundles of 150+wires that they have to look absolutely perfect in racks you'll develop a sense of wiring feng shui. (lol I can't believe i wrote that).

Haha - nothing wrong with wiring feng shui if this leads to results like THIS! OK, i see, yes, this is a good starting point for a DIY "career" - and yes, i know drip makes very, very detailed build manuals...i guess this reflects in the pcb "kits" prices... Well, it's out of question i would ever build a fairchild670 or an UE-100 (what the heck - who came to the idea a thing like THIS could be a cool DIY project??? - People could also come to the idea to DIY-build an EMT266 or whatever...but well - sure - it is somehow really cool, IF money is not the problem ). Not that it wouldn't be nice to have one, but cost is a factor...............at least for me, and i am poor.... Man, the wiring craftsmenship is really good to have - before trying to build such beasts. Just to shed a little different light on this - before anyone thinks, a fairchild would generally be a good idea for a FIRST DIY project, LOL..... Thanks for all the info, very interesting! Best regards, Martin

I'd love to hear audio of your 670 on a "before and after" vocal. I read this SOS article that talks about Geoff Emerick using it on all Beatles vocals and Jack Joseph Puig saying that it makes notes "long and lush and beautiful".

Those 2 are to power up the AGC card and the fans. You can buy them from ebay and you can power them from the spare winding from T303
