My family surprised me with A Taylor 614CE. It is a grand auditorium with "Curly MAPLE" back and sides and the standard Spruce top. I have NO Idea how they found this gem but they did without my help or my knowledge. I am blown away at the kindness and it is an awesome little ax. I am not a Taylor lover and a former owner of a 710CE. However, in the same way that I have found standouts in the Martin line (don't like the line), this is exactly that. It seems to be a love child of a Taylor and Alvarez. Played quietly, it has some of the TAYLOR clarity up top. When you dig in with a pick, the midrange opens up and bottom weighs in nicely but not overdone. Honestly, I have been trying to nail the sound with words. Perhaps - a love child of Talylor/Alvarez/Gibson. It is very different, projects like a beast and sounds very open and balanced. Here are some pics. That is my FrankenSquire next to it and of course, I had to throw one in of my baby, my Black Falcon. My lights are bit low tonight in the Studio (good for mixing). Sorry.

Oh, it's a 2001. That could explain the more balanced sound as compared to the simply bright zing of my 710CE that I had years back.

Very nice! Taylor guitars are by far the best sounding acoustics for under 3k and their higher end models are definitely worthy too.
