Curious if anyone has gone down that rabbit hole.

I'd be happy to, but they are not passive. Unless I'm misunderstanding something.... Haven't had a full coffee yet.

I know Matt at IAA has built a few for customers.

2 tubes means it’s not passive.

2 tubes means it’s not passive. Of course I should actually read your post 😁 It looks interesting!

I built a box inspired by Iron Age Audio’s Portia Street Stomp, and it’s pretty fantastic for adding some interest to virtual and sampled instruments, and anything that needs a little transient shaving or hormonic distortion.

I've built a few out of different transformers. Always nice to add some texture to things or help out some reissue boxes (the newer UA LA2A was always kinda boring to me until I put some old UTC's around it). I've done Triad, St Ives, UTC, all fun stuff. The Kazrog True Iron is a fun approximation. I'll be running some audio thru the Hairball compressions mentioned in another thread, shoot over audio and I can run thru the transformers when I get around to doing that.

Yeah what people always seam to forget that at the time most of these classic transformers were designed with the ideas of minimizing coloration as one of the priorities. Nobody knew we would want the sound of iron.

Nobody knew we would want the sound of iron. Yeah, it's a funny thing that our engineering forefathers just got right. It's not like it turned the LA2A into a distortion box or anything but all of a sudden it just sounded right and inspiring after many years of just being there. Same as running the St Ives pair with my AML or LTL boxes, things just get more 'recordy' sounding. I need to resolder one of my Triad's as I pulled a pigtail loose but I even put them after Anamods with UTC's before to complete my Fauxchild setup. Fun rabbit holes that you can't shock yourself with.

Nobody knew we would want the sound of iron. If digital had existed back then and the sound of our favorite records had been clinical digital, DPA-microphone style recordings, I bet we would all be seeking ultimate purity. Once youngsters get used to clinical ITB mixes, the analog fetish might disappear. Maybe?

This is the only truly passive unit I know of. It requires no power source. The only other thing that comes to mind would be passing the signal through a transformer.

Tim, you always seam to be the one who has to very subtly point out Jacob is a genius who manages to fly under the radar 😁

I once put a bunch of stereo pairs together in a 1U rackmount box, but then sold it off like a dummy. I still have a box of old transformers I should wire up and play around with again...

I kept WE 111-C’s on my main out for years, cool subtle sound. Pulled them when I settled on a main comp that’s transformer coupled in/out, no need for an additional transformer stage. Many times now it’s a couple parallel bus comps hitting a passive summing mixer, sometimes i’ll use something colorful for makeup gain but most times I’m digital gain in the converter to get there.
