Always hear this kind of story, and now I’m living it….
Pro songwriter/producer…”Hey can you master these recordings I just finished? Me-“Sure! Here ya go!” Pro- “Sounds really great man! What do I owe you?” End scene.
Local band….”Hey can you mix and master this live recording for us?” Me- “Sure I’d love to! Give me a few weeks to get a few mixes together and I’ll send it over.” Local band- “Hey mixes are great just a few notes” Notes- 7,000 adjustments, no one is loud enough, the vocals are too loud, can you pan this here and this there and then add more delay to this word but not this one, and can the drums sound more exciting in the break, and etc etc etc. Me- “Sure no problem.” End scene.

Hahaha! It’s how we learn. I feel you brother.
Most important is getting payment at this point so you’re not out a week of your life for nothing. This is a good argument for getting paid UP FRONT and charging by the hour for revisions.

Yeah I mean, it’s kind of a favor, and it’s not the greatest live recording ever, so I’m trying not to get caught in the weeds over it!

Young independent start-up bands usually have 1-4 geniuses (genii) in them who inherently know how to do our jobs better than we do, can hear things we can't, and clearly think that they are on the verge of being the next global sensation. A few knocks and humility enters the picture and they are much easier to deal with.

It's not that bad lol....the issue is that it's a live recording, and I'm really struggling to balance it the way I want because everything bleeds into everything! Like I can turn down the vocal mic, but that doesn't change the fact the room mics were right near the PA speakers, or that the bass is in everything. It's like, I wanted to do this as a favor, but now I'm in it and it's a pain in the arse....

I've found that the more edits or changes the band wants, the more insecure they are about what they're doing. They typically want to feel in control of the situation, so they invent things to "fix".
However, I just had the exact opposite experience..
Been working with an artist of a few months off and on. He's got it all "in his head" which is usually a *bad* thing, but for the most part, it's been working out pretty well. He wanted to book a 4 hour block just for mixing a single song. He sent me some guitar tracks (recorded elsewhere) to add to the rest of the mix before he got there. I went ahead and put it all together and did a quick mix that I thought sounded pretty damn good but I had no idea what he actually wanted in the end.
He came in, immediately started talking about what we would listen to first.. "We'll start by going through each guitar and add them to the mix.." So while he was getting settled in, I asked him to listen to what I put together already.
4 minutes later he just said "Cool. Guess I didn't need to come in for the session." and that was that. He didn't really have anything he wanted to change, which is actually REALLY scary. When folks don't have any feedback, sometimes it's because it's so far off from what they wanted they can't even process it or put into words.
Nope. Turns out he just liked the mix as-is. I'm actually the one who's been doing tiny little moves to make it even better and every time he's like "It's cool man, let it be!".
