The full Title sets the tone. (Sorry "Followers" was too long)
In the post Apocalypse of Music Industry sales decline. Along with the Pandemic effects thrown on for good (bad) measure...
Thought the new climate might make for interesting discussion. Including some prominent examples, Ala Rick Beato and Warren Huart.
Your thoughts? Thanks, Chris

Yeah, using your musical notoriety to sell yourself seems to be the new model for making money in the music biz. God only knows, there's not much money left to be made in actually making MUSIC anymore. Add in A.I., spiraling inflation, costs of living, etc., and you gotta do what you gotta do. For many, that's leaving the actual making of music behind. I guess the next best thing is to make money off of telling people how to make money off making music. LOL. People still want to believe.
I've been encouraged by so many to do that, but it's just not my bag. Seems weird to me. I'd love to mentor, but there are very few dedicated enough to actually make a run for it and be successful. I hope that I can retain just making music, but it gets harder every year.

I think the relative lack of success most DIY recordings have is exactly where AI recordings will go. I've never forgotten Steve Cropper telling me "back to the top, I started thinking!"

Here is an interesting question, will the industry stay away from AI simply because it’s easier to screw with humans vs a corporate software company and its lawyers? Think about it for a second, if my software generates IP then don’t I retain at least part of the rights? The music business has always been the big bad boogie man preying on those who want to make it, but in the world of AI they suddenly become the little guy.

I finally decided to have AI write my biography. It'll be an auto-biography.
Why do AI's lose at chess? They can't recaptcha! Chris

Reminds me of Bro Country.

OK. Cool. I'm not getting the comparison from making music to selling clicks and influencing gear purchases though.....

I guess he’s talking about how all these “influencers” end up sounding the same using the same types of clickbait titles. Bro Country definitely all sounds the same as evidenced by this:

Speaking of "clicks"... I liked when John K. had that Thread about finger snapping.
Nothing like a real drummer. Or at least good Samples. Unless Sinatra/Darin/Peggy Lee are snappin' Chrus

Yeah, using your musical notoriety to sell yourself seems to be the new model for making money in the music biz. It's repulsive. The dignity and strength of character of the faceless men and women of music has been tainted by this narcissistic self aggrandizing new model. I just deleted about 4 paragraphs of replies to this very topic..probably better left to a private communication because even discussing it openly and honestly will be as polarising as it would also be kind of doing the same thing via name dropping or crapping on about my own work experiences over the decades. Hang on to yourself Dr Bill, there is much more at stake than a bit more loose change in your front pocket is my opinion. I contributed to a book project for a very famous band I once worked for and it was not the experience or the result that I expected. No one actually wants to hear truths, they only want to hear what they expect to hear anyways.
And that was just 1 experience.
As that might pertain to engineering/producing I honestly think being more enigmatic and more of an unknown quantity will once again have profound value as all the cheapness of this current trend starts to reveal itself. If mentoring is an aspiration, build it and cultivate it in your own patch, one on one in your own world with your own people that you can reach out look in the eye and have that authentic tactile intellectual and emotionally intelligent life enhancing experience with people.
The two main producers/engineers I work for have incredibly prolific and remarkable resumes, they would both run me off site if I ever proposed them doing these types of YT or private network mix/producing tutorials.
It goes against just about everything they believe in as magicians.
Just my 2 cents.

Well-known independent labels that used to innovate now sign new artists based off of their appearance or social media following instead of their music. Clients and friends were told this verbatim by the labels' owners and executives.

Clients and friends were told this verbatim by the labels' owners and executives. Some labels have experienced a gentrification effect as well. Kids of once passionate professionals step in with their entitled "thoughts" and opinions of what is deserving of attention. The glut in substance is no accident, it's a reflection of those who have nothing to gain or lose from their "something to do" job. Perhaps we're still not allowed to talk about this because of well placed rock star kids being part of the problem.
I remember when 4AD was a label die hard music fans who loved and believed in these bands so much they made it their life's work to draw attention them. I have no idea wtf happened to that particular label, or the others. It all became a fmcg for someone's kids summer project. I have some stories for sure
I'll probably get banned from this site now..lol

Thing is, those that genuinely have a life of remarkable experiences within their art I urge to hang on to it, once it's out in the wild it's lost to you forever. That intimate memory, that shared and lived experience the struggles and life difficulties shared with people who most don't even see as the regular hard working people they actually are. You can't talk about them working their nuts off to get the rent paid or trying to prise legit earnings from the hands of those who never had any intentions of paying. Their fans don't want to hear any of that, only what they want to hear If you give it all away for a few silver coins, it's not yours anymore and you can't fill that hole ever. Not everything needs to be for sale. Looking a soul in the eyes and sharing, now that's how it's done man.

Miki Berenyi from Lush’s book covers the 4AD sell out drama.
