Hey guys, what do you feel is the best $500 or thereabouts bass. I use a Laney DigBeth DI/tone box. I have a 90's Fender 4 string PJ active bass and a Harley Benton MM copy. The former is ok but only 4 strings. The HB plays fine but is kind of blah and muddy. I tend to like thinner necks, as a guitar player. I am filling in on bass. Church has a Ibanez 305. Will play that tomorrow and see how it goes. I want solid bottom end but present mids and enough top for definition. Not sure about the stingray top end. I think I like things more even though I know I could dial the top back as needed. Considering these presently: - Ibanez SR6 or SR7 series
- Sterling Ray 5, Ray 25 or Ray 35
- Schecter
- ESP
- Squire Modern PJ
- ??
Thanks for sharing any thoughts you have.

I have an Ibanez SR 505 and love it. It’s a great bass. Absolutely killer value. I did have a tuner break after about 10 years, but I just replaced all of them with high quality tuners and it was an easy fix.
The sterling stingrays are solid but I feel they’re more of a distinct sound. Not as versatile. But maybe that works for you? Idk. I feel like the SR 5’s and SR 6’s etc are better basses all around, but ymmv.
If you add Jazz basses and P basses I tot he mix I’m sure you could find some really good used basses in that price range too.
A lot of it comes down to personal preference and how the string/neck geometry gells with you. Do you like fat necks? Skinny necks? Flat radius etc? Shorter scale vs longer scale? There’s so much variation with bases it’s crazy.

I hear you about preference. I played the Ibanez 305 today. It was better feeling and sounding than what I have. B string is a little anemic though. I do like how Ibanezes feel, skinny neck.
Discovered this... looks like an amazing project.

I occasionally work with a guy who has a 5 string Fender P bass. Kind of hard to go wrong with that..

Discovered this... looks like an amazing project. try the higher end ones, like the 505 or 605. Also, my bass really benefited from a proper setup. Once I got the intonation and string height really dialed it the low B really came to life. I find that’s something that a lot of mid tier instruments need. I also had to experiment with different strings…but that another rabbit hole.
