I am sure this depends on a lot of things, especially the guitar itself. Just wondering what your favorite recording strings are.
I have long favored John Pearse 600Ls for acoustic, but after I acquired a 70s Martin D-35, which has quite a bit of "thunder" I ended up moving to Martin Lifespan 2.0s and am quite happy with them - switch all 3 of my acoustics over to them and they are consistent in a focused low end, clear mids and a chimey but not overly bright high end. I know Elixirs are a big favorite among players but I have never really cared for them.
The two main guitars: '76 Martin D-35 and a Yamaha AC1R
Would love to hear what has worked well for recording for you.

I’ve been using Martin or D Addario Nickel Bronze strings. My acoustic was sounding overly bright and Nickel Bronze strings really changed the sound in a positive direction

D'Addario phosphor bronze, at least 6 months old.
I hate new strings.

I used to love the Martin acoustic strings with the gold colored plain b and e strings . . . but they've changed them now.

I also have an AC1R.
Amazing guitar, sounds fantastic with Ernie Balls and Elixirs.
Definitely a bright guitar so maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but I personally find the brightness to be very pleasant and not overly picky/twangy.
Have yet to find a mic I don't like for that one. It's just a good-sounding guitar with minimal fuss. Have used my Upton 251, M149, UT FET47, and even my EMM-6 (I swear this is a hidden gem for strummed acoustic guitar) with great results.

For more brilliant, rich tones, Newtone Masterclass from the UK are the best I've found. The last much longer than the standard Martins and D'Addarios (which I like on the 2nd and 3rd day, but not outside that narrow window), though not as long as a coated string. I'll string them up just for recording. The Santa Cruz low-tensions have a wonderful wound string because they behave more like classical strings. Less boom and more of a long-sustaining purr. They barely change in tone as well and last ridiculously long. The crazy price is actually offset by the lifespan. That's really important to me as I hate spending time changing strings. The SCGC helped me get off the Elixirs, which I had a love/hate relationship with.
String choices vary so much though. My Waterloo WL-S sounds amazing with the 4 year old strings it has on it now. Just the nature of that guitar. The dead strings let your fingers express so much through that instrument because then the sound isn't showered in overtones. I find my dreads are the opposite, they sound like big cardboard boxes when the strings dull. Trying different strings is a lot of fun (even though the changing them part isn't). I have shoeboxes full of various strings, some I haven't even tried yet.

Been using Ernie Ball nines and tens on electrics and recently went back to Elixir Phos Bronze 11 or 12s on acoustic...

There are way too many stupid change decisions made in the MI world. Why can't they leave well enough alone when they have a winning recipe?

I bought a bunch of Martin SPs in Phosphor Bronze a couple years ago and still haven't gone all the way through them. Dang! I really like them.

I hate bright strings these days. They drive me nuts. They sound like brassy metal rather than bringing out the woodiness of the guitar. So I mostly just don't change strings (on acoustic) any more than I absolutely have to. Still, back over Christmas, I had to on both my McIlroy and Taylor. For the last few years, I'd been using Martin Phosphor/Bronze Med/Light (12.5s) and leaving them on for as long as possible. But it usually takes weeks if not months for them to age to where I really like them. So I wanted to try something that might sound "old" faster.
So now I'm trying out Martin Monels to see if they sound mellow-er enough. The jury is still very much out for me. I'm not sure I'm digging them. I thought I was at first, but now they're bugging me a little. I might just go back to the Martin P/Bs. But now it sounds like those have changed formula?? Dangit!
I've looked at others online, but haven't bought any others yet. Anybody know of any strings that sound "old" really fast?
Oh, and my J45 that used to belong to cowboycoalminer? It's a 2016, and he said he put Martin mediums on it when he got it new. And he never changed the strings ever. It's a little hard for me to believe b/c there are no rust spots or anything in the strings, but oh well. They sound PERFECT. I would love to open a set of new strings, put them on a guitar, and have them sound like THAT.

I loved those strings and they are what came from the factory on my j45. I read on another forum that GHS made them for Gibson and some suggested Vintage Bronze (85/15) or Bright bronze (80/20 and prob the closest) as replacements. I’m going to have to check them out as it’s been some time since I used the masterbuilts.

If I'm recording a very sparse arrangement with my Roy Noble Madi/Cedar then it's D'Addario Phosphor Bronze. If there's lots going on then the Martin Monel because there seems less harmonics heard and won't muss it up. The others all just get D'Addario Phosphor Bronze. I buy them in the ten pack and go through about 25 a year.
