I've kind of blown these off in the past seeing them in music stores, they just looked like toys. I had an artist send me a song to mix where they used one of these Kala U-Bass guitars with the rubber polyurethane stings and was surprised it worked so well. I decided to give one a try and it's been really great. It's still a bit of a niche instrument and probably will not get used a lot, but it's pretty great when called for. You're not going to get this type of sound out of another bass as easily.
Here's my review. I have a couple of full song samples where I used it. I also show an example of mic'ing it up and using it in conjunction with the built in pickup. You can get close to upright bass territory in a pinch blending the two together. They're pretty affordable, so definitely worth it to add to the studio instrument lineup without breaking the bank. The basic models cost about as much as a guitar pedal...

I’ve had one of these for probably 10 years or something. It gets very little use here, but when it’s cool, it’s cool. With mine, the E string is WAY too powerful and the G string is too light sounding. I’ve only used it plugged in for recordings, never mic’d. I’ve literally been using it as a 2 string bass. 😂😂 Have you noticed issues with your bass? I just tracked a bass part with it a couple weeks ago. We’re still in the demo stages right now, scratch DI guitar, no vocal, no mixing or anything really yet. drive.google.com/file/d/1RHFy-pXUF3UazPe7k6zrKWHSak903y2F/view?usp=drivesdk

Where it has the most value is in its portability and playability. If you're a bass player with an injury or dealing with arthritis, you'll find it plays super easy. Agree with jcoutu1 It's a one-trick pony in the studio. That said, it's a nice little trick. I recorded this track (it looks like 7 years ago according to SC) with just the U-bass, a standard soprano ukulele and a synth pad, so the bass is nice and exposed. Hah, Just gave it a listen and remembered that it was one of the few times I was able to get my wife to sing on a track (in the outro). I really like the soft yet defined acoustic sounding fleshy thump in the attack that the rubbery/nylony strings create, and at the bottom of its range when playing near the nut it actually growls a little. https%3A//soundcloud.com/m57/dont-give-up-the-moonSorry about the sibilance. I need to find it in the archives and re-mix it. My ears are ringing.
