So, I'm maxed out in all ways when it comes to studio gear. Upgrade cycle is complete and it's probably going to be another decade before anything changes, so instead of fussing on that part it's on to the journey of recording. If there's a piece of equipment I have that anyone wants to know about, just Shadowk me.
I've discovered a revelation of sorts, it seems that I the opposite of stage fright which is rare (I think?).. I've played in a lot of bands, sung many songs live over the last few decades but in the studio my chest closes up, maybe because it's final or something? A stone tablet imprint. That's one of the reasons why I've not recorded myself all that much, although I found a lost track that I'd recorded seven years ago and it was looking like I was at the precipice of sorting it all out, it sounded fine.. So, I'm trying to remember what I did and working through it, I guess it's a shame that I didn't keep it up but career, life, health etc.
Next up is practice in general, I was doing drum rolls for 5 hours last night. Turns out my left hand has become far weaker than my right, I know what you're thinking, don't say it..
Originally I wanted an American Fender HSH but I found the player version easier to urr, well, play so I bought that and saved myself a grand. So, cool, next up is a bit more rewiring (I do that way too much) and then more recording. As I find tips and tricks along the way I'll share FWIW, might as well and never a problem always a solution.
Lastly, I couldn't decide on a genre so I decided to do most of them. Anything from pop to rock, metal, opera, swing, whatever works.. It'll be interesting at least.

Okay, so rewiring done.. Learned a few things today especially in a Carbon expanded system. > Firstly carpet underlay is great for placing rackmount equipment on stuff without scratching your precious if you've got any laying about. > Avoid MAC AMS with Carbon like the plague, it was racking up 35% CPU. I don't care if the manual says use it, stick to Carbon Central. Awesome, saved me a new MAC. > If you're below Pro Tools 2022.10 best of luck, get a sub or it won't work.
> You actually have to activate your Carbon Pre in Pro Tools, it literally didn't work for me until I added it to the playback engine. > Only select the pre expansion as a core audio device for general listening, in audio midi setup you can select speaker output and I have 7-8 of my second Carbon as an SSL mastering loop but it's also cool for just general listening. > Not much difference between the SSL and Carbon converters, maybe that's a good thing? > It's nice to have a fully functional setup again. > I'm never buying anymore HW after the pain of setting all this up no matter how juicy you make it sound.

Rewiring. My patchbay has a few hundred solder points and beyond the free channels i left empty (and with the the cables wired and laid aside) i won't change anything until i retire. I feel you.

So, I've mainly been working on sound design. One interesting fascet of modern audio is how the kick / synth / bass combo contains so much low frequency information but doesn't seem to trip laptop, car or Iphone speakers. Now of course the primary approach is relatively obvious if one has some experience, a bit of transient shaping and compression, maybe even layering with another kick adding harmonic distortion up the frequency range for it to sit solid across monitors incapable of producing fundamentals. Also sparse productions very much help in this scenario as a dual stacked mastering limiter layout won't trip as much causing interesting results across the spectrum. That being said, I'd like to apply this to more intricate genre's where the kick isn't just a dub, dub, dub, dub. However there is only so much space to work with and eventually something has to give. I'll setup some examples, audio files etc. when I get the chance and display the methodology behind it. Also I've narrowed my monitor decisions down to two candidates, thehightenor will be very happy to hear one of them is the ATC SCM 25's the other is a pair of Geithain RL906's with their cardioid sub. Yes I know it doesn't need to be a Geithain sub but in my room it really did help and I think that's more to do with the desk than anything else, it's a natural reflection source and as my room is deeply treated in the corners whilst it might not benefit in some area's this is one where it does. Ironically this actually might help the ATC's in an LMF scenario, somehow I don't believe there will necessarily be a lack of bass. If there is a sub always an option.. Maybe ATC and Geithain sub?! Just to shake up that Martini..
