Or even recorded one? Been in the same room as one? Know of modern ones that don’t suck?
I did talk to Lindley about his but can’t remember what he was playing and I wont get to have that conversation again, sadly.
Cheers, Geoff

I’ve recorded them a few times, what’s your question/concern about them?

I’ve recorded them a few times, what’s your question/concern about them? I guess does koa matter tonally. I have done a bit more digging and the ones Lindley were playing were sapele. And he of course sounded magnificent. I am no Mr. Dave by any stretch. would you be scared off by laminate back and sides? Probably going to be hard to find one locally to try, although one place is a dealer for a couple brands on the low end of the scale. They mostly seem to get ukes in though. Cheers, Geoff

Cheers, Geoff To be honest the only two people I've recorded playing one is Jerry Douglas and Andy Hall, and both of them were playing Jerry's Style 1 which is from the 1910's. So, I'm not the player and wouldn't know what to do with one if it was handed to me! But I'm pretty sure that one is all Koa. They are very quiet compared to a Dobro (obviously) but have a pretty fun wire-y sound. Jerry has a sound hole pick up in his which really helps the sustain...just sneaking it in helps. I have a terrible memory of what songs we've used it on but if I remember I'll post an example

I've recorded one a few times and other guitars made of koa. All sound great to me, tonally similar to mahogany
