With a Hairball blue stripe 1176 roughly 65% complete, I'm thinking a DIY condenser would be a fun next project.
Anyone familiar with the AKG / Neumann kits available at micandmod.com?
Any other options recommended for a Neumann build?
Thanks in advance.

I will chime in with my usual response to requests for info about Mic and Mod: These guys have a reputation for using other people's work without attribution or compensation. You can find the details with a little searching at the Group DIY site. If you care about such things, you probably want to look somewhere else...
Regards, John

That's great to know. Thanks for sharing.
What's the move these days / who's a reputable supplier of parts for someone generally interested in building a badass DIY mic?
It doesn't need to be an emulation of anything it just needs to be a fun project and sound great.

I made a couple of U87 builds a year ago, and a couple of months back did a U47 Fet. The PCBs came from Vintagemicrophonepcbkit.com, and I followed the relevant build threads over at the groupdiy forum. The donor bodies were two ADK A-51s, and a T-bone SCT-700. Capsules were Arienne Audio.
Really enjoyed building them, and have put them all to good practical use which is pretty satisfying.

Thanks everyone for the great info! Much appreciated.
A handful of these Mic Parts builds look really interesting - the 87 is priced so reasonably I almost have to try it, and the tube stuff like 12-251 and 47's are very tempting. Very. Anybody spent much time recording with any of these Mic Part builds? I'm familiar with Roswell.
vintagemicrophonepcbkit.com was a great recommendation and would be a fun approach too.

I built the Mic Parts SDC snare mic, which we continue to use on every drum project. I also built five of their S25 mics to use on drums which are quite acceptable, but they were replaced by Roswell Mini K67x & Mini K47x mics. I actually would like to sell the S25s, as I have no need for them ATM.

I've built a few of their kits now. I can't imagine a better set of instructions for a first time builder. My first builds were the 12-251 and VPS1 power supply. I've never used a real C12 or 251 so I can't compare, but the 12-251 is very clean and elegant with a healthy output. The RK12 capsule wasn't the best for my voice and I didn't love their RK47 either. I landed on an Advanced Audio AK67 capsule in that one and have been pretty happy with it on my voice. Their T12 kit I thought sounded great with the RK12 capsule.

I wish Serrano and Stam offered DIY kits but I understand that's a whole new realm of customer service. I built one of the earlier Dachman DA87's and although that was a tougher build, that mic sounds great too. Don't think they offer kits anymore though. It was almost indistinguishable to the Serrano that I tried.

During Covid I built 2 U67s, 1 U87 and a 47 Fet with vintagepcbkits pcbs.
Beesneez capsules for the first two, reskinned second hand neumann capsules for the other two. AMI transformers.
Very pleased with them all, and mostly fun to build, though building the U67 PSUs included a bit more handiwork than expected; making pretty holes for Euroconnectors, XLRs etc can be an uphill battle

I’ve done two U67s, 251s and a U47 from pcbs/kits from over at groupdiy. Have also done KM84s, 414ebs and a FET47
Love them all but I think the U67 with Neumann K67 is my current favourite mic (the other one has a Beesneez capsule which is pretty much identical to my ears).
Can’t go wrong with these. I’d advocate Moby’s transformers, they’re great.
