The Sontec clone was pretty good. I have one and it rocks. I'm not sure if the PCBs are being made anymore though.

Nope, it was the one Fabio did under the Canil badge many years ago. I think there was some legal issues with making clones due to the Sontec units still being in production and that's why they aren't being cloned now.

Shame. It seems debatable whether Sontec are "in production" !

I've actually got a set of Igor's Sontec PCBs and all the pots if anybody wants to do this build. I don't have a PSU for it though and frankly don't remember what it needs. It's been sitting here for a few years and I may have to finally admit that I'll never get to it.

Well, Fabio Bauman's Sontec was a beast to build. Many daughter PCBs, alot of wiring and it could be a hell to get it quiet. I was very tempted to put my hands on it, but was concerned i could lose my mind about all those possible sources of problems and debugging.... Although this was a milestone in DIY somehow, Igor's approach to it is a much easier, somewhat simplified build. But for sure the Sontec (or, if you mind to set a few values differently, the Massenbg. equivalent) is a very desireable bus EQ, whatever kind of build you prefer... Another nice EQ for busses, at least in my opinion, would be ... surprise... a stereo pultec, maybe a solid state one. (Yes, even on master bus). Maybe Steffen's design...Other nice options for the master bus/mastering are two of audiox's very nice projects, the Neumann W492 and Studer 169 EQs, great quality EQs. Gustav has pcbs of both in stock...the 169 only in 500 format, but if one does not mind self-etching, the 19" version pcb docs have been published over at groupdiy, standard and mastering versions. The 169 eq is a minimalistic but good sounding design, a low parts count, easy build. No fancy parts needed, one could even p2p+veroboard these, they are not complicated at all. Best regards, Martin

Must go to bed and dream about yards and yards of wiring. all the best, David

I know you guys won't like this but I can imagine anything better the UBK Clariphonic. I'm using the plugin version and it's euphoric.

I know I know I know but you guys should really try it! Plug or hardware. Just do it. You have nothing to lose by demoing it! Tell me that isn't cool! Ok I'll play fair. I'd wait until the CAPI 553 is ready, it's described as a sweetener which we all like. OR 550A Clone www.diyrecordingequipment.com/projects/tb550a-equalizer/2db is a steep increment for me for a mixbuss, I sometimes use the plugin version just make sure you mix to it, I find I have to back and make changes to things if I slap it on after the fact.

Yeah, I've been asked a few times if it's possible to mod the 550 for .5dB steps, mostly by mastering guys. Unfortunately I just don't have a good answer for that right now. Maybe I'll work it out someday. It might be nice flat just for color, but there are many better and far more useful options for that such as Jeff's VC528.

I really wouldn't worry about modding it. 2db is fine as long as you make your decisions into for me anyways. I'm all plugins now but was looking at either 550s or the Clariphonic for hardware.
