So I bought the whole TDR Special Filters Bundle when it came out last year, but I honestly just hadn't used it much: a combination of less music work overall in 2024 and using tools I was already familiar (and faster) with when I did have something I could've used them on. That's the preamble.
Here's the body: Holy hell. Arbiter might be the best de-esser I've ever tried, and I've tried A LOT of them. I was working on some spoken word dialogue last week and none of my de-essers were quite doing it for me (Waves Ren, Waves Sibilance, DMG Track DS, FabFilter Pro-DS, whatever that Eiosis one is called, the one in iZ RX, Soothe2 -- I feel like there were a couple more I tried, too). I demoed (and ended up buying) the Softube Weiss one and it did a better job than any of the others. But the next day I suddenly remembered TDR Arbiter and gave it a shot. MY GOSH. It absolutely, unquestionably, unflinchingly destroyed everything else by a long, long ways. I am beyond impressed. Oh, and it's like $40 when NOT on sale.
Anyways, maybe it'll work for some of you, maybe it won't. But I am honestly wowed by this thing so far. Give it a demo if you haven't.

I love the one in the Vocal Shaper plug that I just picked up. But de-essers seem to be a tool where there's value in having more than one good one, strange how such a simple problem is so difficult to solve. What makes this one different? Any idea what they're doing that makes it work so well?

Oh, thanks for the reminder - the Vocal Shaper was another one I tried on the same source. No dice at all. What makes this one different? Any idea what they're doing that makes it work so well? Maybe Fabien (of TDR) made a deal with the devil or something? I don't know, man. Straw into gold. This is Rumpelstiltskin level shit. Dan might know.

I can't believe I responded to a TDR post before Dan. Those guys are geniuses. And you know what else? They really nailed their pricing. Now that UAD has broken plugin pricing, turns out TDR knew the market all along. $40 - $60 is just enough for me to value your product but still cheap enough for me to make a somewhat spontaneous decision.

I have no idea. Arbiter replaced Nova GE as a de-esser for me. It's like a DBX 902/520 that doesn't kill detail. OD DeEdger also takes the annoying tick out of high hat riders and the spit out of spitty vocalists while doing less harm most of the time and being easier to use than Spiff. I'm back to using the TDR and Sonnox plugs for basic work because other stuff is buggy or being changed around and I'm not paying WUP.

Well said - it doesn't kill detail or screw with the top end, and yet it still works. That shouldn't be crazy, but it is.

I always have an Arbiter on my vocal tracks in my template since I got it. I also have the Vocal Shaper, the most natural De-esser I've heard but doesn't necessarily work every time, especially on the really pronounced Ess, where Arbiter does very well. Just before these two De-essers I also liked the T-De-esser from Techivation, not natural but I liked the sound. The cool thing about Arbiter is that it can also calm pops, demud, de-harsh...

I'm on my way to try this TDR Arbiter.
My top ones right now are the Lindell 902, a circuit emulation of the DBX 902, and AirWindows DeEss, which works on a similar principle.
Let's see if this TDR thing is better.

Just watched the Dan Worrall video on this, Prism, and the other filters. Arbiter looks really great. Kind of seems like a manual version of Soothe in some ways but with some really cool little bonus features.
Also, Prism is way better than any other metering I own. I'm not in FF world so maybe you guys are used to this type of thing. I need to stop visiting the TDR website, it's killing my "no more plugins" resolutions.

TDR Arbiter has replaced all my de essers > and in use on LF taming on a daily basis. TDR Infrasonic, Koletenov and Molot on every mix too.

Arbiter is amazing. Really useful in mastering (and 2 bus) as well. Infrasonic and Ultrasonic on everything now too

$86 for the filters seems pretty cheap.

Man... I said I didn't need another deesser. I've got probably a dozen right now but have ended up using the Weiss Deesser the most lately. It doesn't kill the source like so many others do. 80 for the bundle isn't bad but I might wait for a sale.

$86 for the filters seems pretty cheap. TDR also does a sale at least a couple times a year, Tony. I would expect one this summer at some point.

I might have to pick this up next. I held off on all the various sales last month, and I don't think I've ever regretted a TDR purchase. Kotelnikov, Slick, and to a lesser extent Limiter get used on virtually every project.
Does anyone remember what the whole pack of filters was selling for when it was on sale?

Honestly I’d pay 40 each for Arbiter and Infrasonic.

For my vocals, crazy as it is, I still manually de-ess - that way I can achieve perfection For other singers, I've had success with Melodyne which has a function to pick out the offending fricative also, Fabfilter is not too shabby.
