With my Falcon, I generally use a POD GO, with a RNDI (of course) and a few pedals. I am lower gain, bright tone (with fullness) guy - kind of like a cross between a Tele on a blackface and a Strat with an old Marshall.
I use the Archon amp patch very clean - amazing on neck. I had been using a Timmy in front for grit and more sustain. But, i came across a NotaKlon on Reverb for the same price as buying from JHS and waiting so I did it. Works great.
Before I ever hooked it up, I began eyeing a Dumble pedal - thinking it would be an always on, modifier to the amp patch to get more touch sensitivity, attack and chime. Before letting myself get another pedal, I took a couple of hours with the NotaKlon and the rig on the PA.
With very low gain, like 8-9 o'clock, and everything else about straight up - wow. It gave me most of what I was hearing with the Dumble pedals, minus the chimey harmonics. It sounds compressed, attack attenuated, and still feel dyanmic, I love the pick attack with the Dunlop 1.4 Flow. It is 85% clean or more but is punch and has sustain. the sustain is as if I have some overdrive pushing hard but I don't. If I push it, it breaks up a little but otherwise is not very hairy. If I back off my playing (not touching knobs) It cleans up beautifully.
Monday, a friend and his band used our room and stage for a set and meeting. He brought a Tele and asked to use my rig. Dang. He made it sound amazing. Was cool to hear someone demonstrate my rig. We have a bog gig in July and he usually brings his Helix and Vox amp. He's planning to use my board now.
I didn't expect a Klon clone to be THAT kind of pedal. I know it does a LOT of other things but never thought it would be good at this. Now back to dumbling or not dumbling...
The Gretsch Falcon is amazing. My first G was a Setzer Sig with flame maple. I had TVJ Filtertrons in it. Was stolen in 2005. Then same year got a Black Falcon. I put TVJ Hilotrons in that one. It had a ton of spank. It got destroyed last year in a freak accident. Recently, I was blessed with a 6136T-59 LPB (Pic is not mine but same 2018 model) It is a 59 reissue featuring TVJ Ray Butts Filtertrons. They are one of the earliest models of pups and are missing some wax which gives them added harmonics. Sometimes I love them and sometimes, I would prefer TVJ classics or TVJ Hilotrons. The Harmonics sometimes get messy but is still a cool vibe.
Related, funny. I took the 2005 TVJ Hilotrons from the destroyed Back Falcon and out them in a 1999 Squire Strat. That squire plays better than my 2022 Roadhouse Strat. Crazy. It was $100 back then. I have locking tuners and HAD vintage noiseless on it. It has been sitting in the office for years, that guitar you pick up when you want to noodle with no amp. I got a fitting pickguard and a harness featuring a blender knob. I have 5-way switching with the TJVs in bridge and neck and a vintage noiseless Gen 1 for the middle. The blender knob blends neck and bridge when on position 1 or 5. The end result is 90% of the strat functionality with all of the Gretsch functionality. Crazy i haven't had it on stage once. I need to hop to. It could be my fav guitar.
Anyone else digging Klons?
