Wife and I went to see Lucinda Williams with the Dirty Knobs last night (Austin, TX - ACL Live Moody Theater- same place they film Austin City Limits now...). It was over 24 hrs ago and I'm still tingling (or maybe that's just the ringing in my ears?)! First off, I was surprised when Lucinda went on first. I was thinking she was billed as the headliner. Anyway, first night of her tour. Excellent band! Two great guitarists, great bass player and great drummer (Brady Blade...). Then Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs came on and it took me a couple seconds but I was like holy shit, that's (Steve) Ferrone! And once again a smokin band. (oh yeah, I'm a drummer too...). I guess they have been playing some shows already and just hooked up with Lucinda. Tom always played her stuff on "Buried Treasure" and she had opened for Tom way back.
Lucinda had a stroke (3 years ago) and she doesn't play guitar anymore, but she did stand for her whole show and then later came up and did 5 or 6 songs with the Dirty Knobs (including a bunch of Tom Petty songs). Her voice sounded... like her. and I like that. I really enjoyed the show and of course I'm spoiled because the venue is top notch. And Mike Campbell, what a guitar player! And the other guys (his 2nd guitarist was Chris Holt) - of course he would not have someone that sucked! Lucinda is 71 and Mike and Steve are both 74! They all played so great. The Dirty Knobs may be one of the best rock and roll bands still playing.
If you get a chance to go see them - DO IT! that is all...
